Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Our Schools Create Unprepared Minds

Our Schools Create Unprepared Minds

I came across a rather disheartening statistic recently: a study reported in the Times of India reveals that only 45% of students feel prepared for life after they leave school. Less than half. This isn't just a number; it's an indictment of an educational system that seems to be operating in a different century.

We are meticulously preparing our children for a world that no longer exists. Our curricula are rooted in the industrial age—focused on standardization, rote learning, and regurgitation of facts for examinations. Yet, the world they will inherit is one of constant flux, defined by technologies that are evolving at an exponential rate.

This gap is something I've been reflecting on for years. Back in 2017, I wrote about the emergence of technologies like Microsoft's Seeing AI, which could interpret human emotions, and mused on the inevitable erosion of privacy. The core idea I wanted to convey then was that technology's march was relentless and would reshape our social contracts. Seeing how things have unfolded, it’s striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. If our legal and social systems were struggling to keep up then, it is no surprise that our static educational models have failed to prepare our youth for the reality of an AI-integrated world.

We are living through a profound transition, a journey towards a new kind of intelligence, as I explored in my thoughts on the Journey to Singularity. The skills required for this new era are not found in textbooks. They are skills of:

  • Adaptability: The ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn continuously, much like we train a personal AI to evolve.
  • Critical Thinking: The capacity to navigate a world of information and misinformation, to debate and arrive at a consensus, a concept I imagined with a platform where multiple AIs collaborate for a better answer (5 LLMs are any day better than one).
  • Emotional Intelligence: The very human qualities of empathy and connection, which are becoming even more valuable as technology automates routine tasks. In fact, as I noted previously, AI is now being developed to fill the gaps in human connection, acting as mental health therapists.

When 55% of our students feel adrift, it signals a profound failure of imagination on our part. We are giving them a map of the old world and pushing them into the new one without a compass. It is time we stop asking if students are ready for the test and start asking if our schools are ready for the future.
