Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Nature’s Dusk: A Million Wings

Nature’s Dusk: A Million Wings
Synopsis: Witnessing a million bats emerge from ancient lava tubes at the Armendaris Ranch is a humbling reminder of nature's resilience. These creatures are not just part of a spectacular wildlife event; they are vital participants in a fragile, interconnected ecosystem that we are privileged to protect.

There is a quiet, profound power in observing the natural world when we step back and let it exist on its own terms. Recently, I have been reflecting on the incredible spectacle that occurs every summer evening at the Armendaris Ranch in New Mexico—a sight that feels both ancient and eternally relevant: the emergence of over a million Mexican free-tailed bats from prehistoric lava tubes.

The Dance of Life and Survival

Watching these creatures stream into the desert sky at sunset is more than just a wildlife experience; it is a masterclass in survival. These Jornada lava tubes, some of the largest in North America, have become a sanctuary for these bats. As I have often remarked in my own explorations, true stewardship involves understanding the delicate balance between species—including the hawks that wait in the sky, ready to participate in this intricate natural cycle.

A Legacy of Conservation

This sanctuary is not an accident. It is the result of years of intentional work. The late Ted Turner — whom many know as a visionary who saw the immense value in protecting vast tracts of our American landscape — understood that land is not merely an asset, but a responsibility. By collaborating with organizations like The Nature Conservancy, Ted Turner ensured that these lava tubes were restored and protected from the threats of human disturbance.

It is heartening to see how these efforts continue to allow biodiversity to flourish. From the Mexican free-tailed bats to the diverse array of species that thrive on these ranches, the Turner Endangered Species Fund remains a beacon of what is possible when we prioritize the health of our ecosystems.

Why This Matters

In my previous reflections, I have often discussed the importance of preserving habitats as a pathway to immortality—not in the human sense, but in the sense of ensuring that the biological systems that sustain life endure beyond our individual lifespans.

When you see a million wings beating in unison against the twilight, you realize that we are just one part of a much larger, magnificent story. If we take the time to protect these spaces, the story continues.
