An IP Address for Homes ?

Times of India ( 16 Nov ) reports :

“ Govt will soon start to map your address digitally “
E-Link Aimed At Helping Identify Locations Easily

The government wants to map your address—residential or professional—digitally, something done by Aadhaar for an individual’s identification.

The department of posts, under the communications ministry, has ordered a pilot project that will accord a six character alpha-numeric digital address for every property for three postal PIN code locations.

The idea is to provide e-location (like on Google Maps) for the addresses therein and then provide possibilities to link it to other information such as property title and ownership, property tax records, information on utilities like electricity, water and gas etc.

The digital identity – say, UV77D7 – will be an e-enabled address that can be used as parallel to the existing postal address

It shortens an address into a combination of six alphabets and numbers.

You can put it on your visiting card, on a website or share via any other means.

If someone is looking to reach you, the person needs to just enter the eLoc in MapmyIndia's maps portal (or app) and it will instantly offer turn-by-turn directions right up to your address.

MapmyIndia MD Rakesh Verma told TOI :

"eLoc will help travellers and commuters search, share and navigate to a destination's exact doorstep far more easily and quickly.

It will also reduce time, money, fuel wastage and expenses for businesses in the e-commerce, transportation, logistics and field operations domains,"

=================================

This is , without doubt , an excellent idea but it needs to be “ improved upon “ , since there are huts and cottages and just “ thatched roofs “ in the middle of deserts or jungles or ( inaccessible by road ) mountain-sides or valleys , which today have NO POSTAL ADDRESSES  !

So , how do you “ Map “ a home / property / location , which has no existing “ Postal Address “ ?

Sure , you can use crossing of latitude and longitude – which is much longer number ( than a 6 digit ) , difficult to remember and not precise enough to deliver parcels or post !

I urge the authorities to consider the scheme developed by :

which has divided the entire surface area of the Earth into a grid of 3 meter by 3 meter squares and assigned each one a unique address made of just 3 words

A total of 57 trillion squares

Each assigned a UNIQUE COMBINATION of just 3 words , out of a total of 40,000 words !

Enabling precisely locating ( online or offline ) any square by 3 word combinations such as :

·         Music.chalks.lids

·         Parting.strumming.stileto

·         Dates.revealing.bind

I expect the What3Word team will soon come up with following improvement :

·         Envisage a space-envelope around the Earth of 300 meters height

·         That height divided into 100 depths of 3 meters each

·         That would give “ 57 trillion multiplied by 100 pyramids of 4 sides each

·         Assign to each of these pyramids , a unique 4 word combination

·         That will enable to locate very precisely and dynamically , any object into space ( of course, up to a height of 300 meters ) . Could be millions of flying drones  ?

In the meantime , UID number ( KW 210995006 ) that BMC has assigned to the building where I live in Mumbai , cannot be located on any BMC or Maharashtra Government web site and there is no use mentioning on my visiting card !

HC  threatens  pay  cuts  if…….

Following news report appeared in today’s Times of India :

“ HC threatens pay cuts if rly FOB not built on time “

The Railways on Friday faced Bombay high court's wrath over its failure to come up with a solution to construct a temporary foot over-bridge near the site of the now demolished Hancock bridge.

"Imagine that it is your own child or your own parent who has to cross the tracks every day. And then think of a solution," said a division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Mahesh Sonak.

The judges warned that they would not hesitate to order stoppage of payment of staff salaries if a solution was not forthcoming. The court asked BMC and railways to come up with a solution by the next date of hearing on November 22.

=================================

Question :

If the officer responsible were to fail to construct that FOB on time, how will HC ensure that his salary is actually cut ? – and how much ? – and for how long ?

I suppose this “ implementation of HC order “ will depend upon some other officer of the Railways

As it has happened in any number of cases in the past , HC orders never get implemented and merely remain on paper . And HC has no means to find out  !

One very important principle of governance is :

Never give a threat unless you are capable of executing it !

On the other hand , if HC is really serious about 100 % implementation of its order , then it should take help of “ technology “ to eliminate ( corruptible / amenable / fallible ) humans from the “ implementation process “ , as explained in :

2 DOWN : 1TO GO !  [  11  Dec  2015  ]

Of course , as far as preventing people from getting run over by local trains in Mumbai ( ave of 10 persons per day ) , is concerned , I have repeatedly sent emails to Shri Piyush Goyal ( and earlier to Shri Suresh Prabhu ) to consider the following technology-based solution :

A Swarm-O-Drone is born

Swarm-O-Drone  =  A Drone with built –in “ Swarm Algorithm “ for collision avoidance  ]

Look out for this headline in Media within 2 / 3 years , by which time , millions of drones would be flying overhead . Drones made by start-ups / cottage industries / you-name-it

Even from self-assembled ( DIY ) drone components, ordered over Amazon / Flipcart / Alibaba !

Drones selling for a few thousand rupees and used for unthought-of uses and especially for delivering anything ordered online – even from your next door chemist ( backbone of E Commerce ]

Even drones capable of carrying one person from point A to point B , like an Uber  /  Ola

Drones flying over city buildings and over distant deserts / jungles / rivers / mountains / in-accessible places

How can we ensure that , in such a “ free for all “ scenario, drones do not keep colliding with each other ?

Of course, modern aircrafts have radar-based “ Collision Avoidance Systems “ , which alert the pilots of approaching aircrafts to take evasive action ( normally , rules re : turning to right / dipping or climbing )

EU and India have recently come out with “ Drone Flight Regulations “ , which envisage arrangements similar to ATC  ( Air Traffic Control ) towers , to direct “ drone traffic

That works fine when only few thousand manned Airplanes are flying over any country at any given time and along rigidly pre-defined Air-Corridors and at predetermined heights and which are constantly in radio contact with, at least one ATC tower at all times ( - which , using GPS , accurately plots the position of all the aircrafts in its vicinity and their directions and destinations )

But that won’t work when a MILLION unmanned drones are flying in all directions , and at different heights and at different speeds and at any time !  Quite like a huge Swarm / Flock of tiny birds

But how come , birds never ( or rarely ) collide , without communicating with each other ?

Apparently , each bird has embedded / hardcoded into its brain , some AI software that senses the distance from surrounding birds , the direction of travel and speed , not only of self but also of the surrounding birds !

A software which enables birds to “ communicate their intentions “ to each other , without internet

This software must be ensuring that there is no collision despite the entire swarm rapidly changing the “ flying parameters “ in unison

Call it “ Swarm Algorithm “

Moral of the story :

·         Historical method of external control ( through ATC ) just won’t work when millions of unmanned drones are flying all over , in a totally random and unpredictable fashion

·         Only thing that can work is to ban any drone that does not have embedded into it , the Swarm Algorithm ( copy the nature ) , described above

·         Just like Industry Standards for many industries , International Civil Aviation Organization [ ICAO ] , must lay down “ Swarm-O-Drone “ standards for Drone Manufacturing Industry

It is always advisable to anticipate / envisage the “ Direction of Technology “ and come up with solutions which nullify its potential ill-effects / misuse

Swarm-O-Drone is a case in point

Saving Earthlings from Space ?

Times of India ( 15 Nov ) carries a news report titled :
=================================

“ ISRO tech to curb accidents at open Railway Crossings “

Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is helping the Indian Railways use its satellite-based system to check accidents at unmanned railway crossings and track train movements on a real-time basis.

Working on a pilot project with Isro, the railways has installed space agency-developed integrated circuit (IC) chips on some train engines. The Indian Regional Navigation
Satellite System (or NaVIC) will be used to warn road users of approaching trains through hooters installed at unmanned road crossings.

Tapan Misra, director of Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Centre (SAC), confirmed that "Isro and the Indian Railways have been working together on this pilot project since June".

Explaining the functioning of the satellite-based system, Misra said, "A hooter will be activated as soon as it gets signal from the IC chip installed on a train when its engine is at a distance of 500 metres to 4 km from the crossing. The hooter, linked to the navigation system, will thus warn road users about the approaching train. It will become louder as the train comes near the crossing and will fall silent after the train has passed."

Misra said, "The satellite-based system will also be used for tracking trains for disseminating information about their movement on a real-time basis." He said, "The system will also help the railways map the area covered by trains. The technology will come in handy at the time of a railway accident when it can be used to ascertain the exact location of a train."

ISRO and Shri Tapan Misra deserve congratulations – and a BIG THANKS – for this initiative to save lives , using NaVIC

I urge Shri Misra to extend the application of NaVIC , to the problems outlined by me in my following E Mail to him :

01  June  2017

Dear Shri Misraji :
Even as I hope that you find a few minutes to consider the feasibility of my following suggestion , I request you to take a look at my today’s blog , below
Warm Regards,
Hemen Parekh
================================================

Who says IMPOSSIBLE  ?

Yesterday , in my blog , I had suggested a solution for collecting “ Parking Charges “ from 20 lakh vehicles that get parked on Mumbai streets at night

And collect fees from 30 lakh ( or whatever number ) vehicles that ply on these streets , during the day time

Then extend this E-Governance to 200 MILLION vehicle population in the entire country

A suggestion that could earn , City Municipalities / State Governments and the Central Government , ( may be ) , Rs 100 crores per day !

You can find the detailed proposal at :

=================================

It is quite possible that some of the readers may entertain doubts as to the feasibility of my suggestion

For them , I reproduce below , a news report from Economic Times ( 31 May 2017 ) :

SOON, SATELLITE NETWORK TO TAKE HD VIDEOS OF EARTH FROM SPACE

A British company is planning to launch a network of satellites that can take high resolution coloured images and videos of the Earth, which could be used to track individual vehicles from space.

A prototype spacecraft is set to be launched later this year for testing. Five more such platforms will follow in 2019.

The train of satellites will deliver rapid, high- resolution imagery of the planet in still and video formats. At best resolution, the images will capture features just
under a meter across

The images would enable 3D models of the ground to be constructed, and videos could be used to track moving objects such as cars and other vehicles, according to UK-based company Earth-i.

UK-based manufacturer Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) has developed a new class of Earth observation spacecraft codenamed Carbonite.

The first in this series was built in just six months and was launched in 2015. The lessons learned from that experience were then applied to the new satellite of the Earth-i constellation.

"We worked on Carbonite-1 with SSTL and studied the performance to help develop the technology for Carbonite-2 which we will be calling EiX2," said Richard Blain, CEO of Earth-i.

"As for the constellation, we will launch that in batches of five," Blain told 'BBC News'.

"Our baseline plan is for the first batch to go into one orbital plane, and then for the following batches to go into different planes, so that not only do we get a high-frequency revisit to places on Earth but we also get to see places at different times of the day," he said.

Earth-i's constellation would be the first European system to provide HD video of activity on the ground.

Dear Shri Gadkariji ,

Here is your opportunity to change the face of  TRANSPORTATION  in India !

Please , grab it  !
