Times of India ( 09 Aug ) published a
CRISIL RESEARCH STUDY report on “ Economies of Owning a Car vs Riding an OLA /
UBER “
Findings :
·
A personal car is cheaper only if the distance driven is over
15,000 km annually and with a chauffeur , this doubles to 30,000 km
·
Total Cost ( fixed + variable
) per km of owning a personal car is as high as Rs 36 / km , if you drive only
6000 km per year
·
At 42,000 km / year , this drops
to Rs 11 / km
·
At 12,000 km / year , it drops to Rs 22 / km
·
Cost per km of a Cab is assumed
at Rs 19 / km
No wonder , UBER
is growing by leaps and bounds !
Look at its statistics :
·
5.5 million trips in Aug 2016
·
9.4 million trips in July 2017
·
450,000 registered drivers on
its platform ( 285,000 active in July )
·
1.3 million rides a day in July 2017, across 29 Indian cities
Comparable figures for OLA are not
available except that OLA has 800,000 driver partners !
India has approx. 200 million vehicles
Out of this some 30 million passenger
cars
Assume that , out of this , some 20 million are self driven cars
If half of these run 12,000 km ( or less
) per year , their owners could , over next 10 years , change over to hailing a
UBER / OLA , generating employment for 10 million drivers !
That is , nearly ONE MILLION drivers per
year !
It seems “ SHARING ECONOMY “ has
arrived
AirBnB is another example
What other “ UNDER-UTILIZED “ resource will come
under the spell of this NEW ECONOMY , next ?
