Climate Conundrum ?

No wonder if you type in Google “ Climate Change Report “ , you get 729,000 results !

Recent media ( online and offline ) are full of articles on the Climate Change Report just published by UN’s Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change [  IPCC  ]

Following are the highlights :

·         Average global temperature will rise by 1.5 degree Celsius , by 2030

·         This will lead to DraughtsFamineDying forests Forest fires Melting ice Disappearing glaciers Warming Seas Shifting currents Species loss Decline in fish catch Declining crop yield Sea level rise Decline in coral reefs Extreme heat waves TornadosFlooding of low lying coastal cities etc………..

·         All of this is caused by emission of green-house gases ( mostly CO2 ) emitted by coal-based power plants and exhaust gases from petrol / diesel vehicles ( transport )

What needs to be done to stop / arrest this change ?

·         De-commission coal based power plants , as fast as we can

·         Change over to Renewable Energy plants [ mainly solar ] – faster than we think we can !

·         Stop manufacture of Petrol / Diesel Vehicles – by 2025 ?

·         Total change-over to Electric Vehicles – by 2030 ?

What is required  ?

·         Political leadership

·         Framework necessary to spur greater finance

·         Unprecedented Funding and Coordination

·         Judicial Intervention

Not having read the original report , I don’t know if it contains a list of SPECIFIC  ACTIONS to be taken by the countries

But following are a few suggestions that I have emailed to our Policy Makers in the past

Our political leaders are busy with the countdown to 2019 ( general election ) from the comfort of their air-conditioned cabins / homes

That leaves it to the Media ( online and offline ) to invite the ordinary citizens to ask :

·         Who should take a lead ( I firmly believe that should be NGOs / Public Policy Think Tanks ) in coming up with practical suggestions to avert the impending disaster ?

·         For larger GOOD of the Society , shall we sacrifice narrow vested interests of certain industries / businesses ?

·         If India is going to be one of the worst affected due to climate change , should not the citizens draw up a CHARTER  OF  DEMANDS [ a very detailed / specific ACTION PLAN ],send it to the political parties by end Nov 2018 , and tell the political parties :

We will NOT vote for those political parties in 2019 Election , which refuses to

accept to implement this CHARTER , whether voted to power or sitting in the

           opposition “

2030 is the Doomsday and the countdown has started  !

Internet Bill of Rights

[ Source :

Following “ Internet Bill of Rights “ is prepared by Ro Khanna — the Democratic representative from California

The internet age and digital revolution have changed Americans’ way of life.  As our lives and the U.S. economy are more tied to the internet, it is essential to provide Americans with basic protections online.

You should have the right :

(1)
to have access to and knowledge of all collection and uses of personal data by companies

(2)
to opt-in consent to the collection of personal data by any party and to the sharing of personal data with a third party

(3)
where context appropriate and with a fair process, to obtain, correct or delete personal data controlled by any company and to have those requests honored by third parties

(4)
to have personal data secured and to be notified in a timely manner when a security breach or unauthorized access of personal data is discovered

(5)
to move all personal data from one network to the next

(6)
to access and use the internet without internet service providers blocking, throttling, engaging in paid prioritization or otherwise unfairly favoring content, applications, services or devices

(7)

to internet service without the collection of data that is unnecessary for providing the requested service, absent opt-in consent

(8)
to have access to multiple viable, affordable internet platforms, services and providers with clear and transparent pricing

(9)
not to be unfairly discriminated against or exploited based on your personal data

(10)
to have an entity that collects your personal data have reasonable business practices and accountability to protect your privacy.

Extract from the article :

Comments by interviewer Kara Swisher ( who interviewed Ron Khanna )

“ It’s an admirable list, but I suspect that if Democrats try to turn these principles into law, it will be like pushing back the ocean, especially since the business models of many of these companies are predicated on sucking up as much data as they can and exploiting it for gain. The consumer is the product

Mr. Berners-Lee, who is widely known as the inventor of the World Wide Web and who advised Mr. Khanna on the creation of his list, agrees.

“ If the internet is to live up to its potential as a force for good in the world, we need safeguards that ensure fairness, openness and human dignity,” he said in an email.

“ This Bill of Rights provides a set of principles that are about giving users more control of their online lives while creating a healthier internet economy.”

Comments by Ro Khanna :

Mr. Khanna said he gets that it will be a slow road, and it will definitely require bipartisan support.

This is a 15-year fight, but I do not think tech is immediately primed against it and Congress is more willing to be strong on regulation,” he told me.

“Tech is amoral — it is great in many ways but not as great in others, and they need to now spend the next 10 years thinking about how they shape that tech for public good.”

My  Take :

·         Most of the points covered above have also found place in B N Shrikrishna Committee Report

·         If all powerful American Congress / Senate may take 15 YEARS to put into place, a viable DATA PROTECTION LAW, how long will it take us ?

·         Under Ro Khanna’s proposal , it will be up to “ aggrieved individual citizen “ to fight out his case ( in a court of law ) for any misuse of his personal consent by Facebook / Google etc .

It would be the same with our own proposed DATA  PROTECTION  LAW !

This is mockery  !

Do we expect ONE BILLION Indians to hire Cyber Crime Experts / Lawyers, to keep spying on hundreds of web sites to unearth WHO is misusing his personal data , WHEN and HOW and for WHAT purpose , in breach of his personal / individual “ Contract “ with the offender , as per “ I accept the TERMS / CONDITIONS “ click ?

Dear Shri RaviShankar Prasadji,

Only way to protect our ONE BILLION citizens ( from misuse of personal data ) is :

#   Terminate the legal validity of those 100 BILLION “ individual contracts “ [ 1 billion
     persons x 100 web sites ]

#   On behalf of these 1 Billion Indian citizens , government ( Data Protection Regulator
-      DPR ) to enter into consolidated contracts with those 100 web sites

#   Web sites not willing to sign such agreement / contract with DPR , must be asked to
QUIT INDIA ( - if China can do this , why can’t we ? )

I once again urge you to consider my detailed suggestion in following earlier e mail  :

Big tech companies must have better-designed deliberative platforms, individuals must own their data under an internet bill of rights, social media companies must be held accountable for content inciting violence while allowing all political viewpoints, and they must not enjoy blanket immunity under the guise of being intermediaries, Ro Khanna, the Indian-American Congressman

In an interview, Khanna also advocated a tax on digital companies that goes into an independent fund to support journalism and said there should be compensation for use of content on links on social media if that content is coming from journalism or newspapers.
