The BIG TECH : Ask Them to Return the Loot

Dear Smt Sitharamanji ,

India is a party to the 2021 OECD-sponsored agreement between 140 countries, to levy minimum global corporate tax of 15% on multinational companies

To best of my knowledge, this has not been implemented by India, so far

If – and when – we try to implement it , legal battles will never end

In the meantime , BIG TECH are having a field-day, compiling private / personal USER DATA ( without their explicit / informed consent ) – then SELLING that data to advertisers to mint BILLIONS of dollars, year after yea

r

I urge you to consider my several earlier emails , suggesting a simple method of enabling India’s 500 million users of Big Tech, to monetize their personal data , by forcing Big Tech to compensate the users

Eg ; Even if Big Tech companies are required to pay $ 100 ( Rs 8300 ) per year to our 500 million users , that would amount to $ 50 Billion / year

Compare this with figure of $ 66.3 Billion mentioned in the last column of following tabulation

At the bottom of this mail, I list my earlier emails

As Big Tech scrambles to meet EU rules, investigations seen as likely  .. Reuters … 07 March 2024

Extract :

The world's biggest tech companies have overhauled their core platform services to comply with EU rules forcing them to play fairer with rivals but will likely face investigations ahead amid criticism their efforts may have fallen short.

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is one of the most comprehensive regulatory actions to rein in so-called " Big Tech " - Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and TikTok owner ByteDance - and is expected to reshape the global technology industry after decades of unfettered growth.

Criticism from rivals and users and cautionary comments from watchdogs suggest a couple of the six companies may be in the regulatory crosshairs over potential non-compliance in the coming months.

If any of the six tech giants are not compliant with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by the EU's Thursday deadline, they could ultimately face investigations and potentially fines of up to 10% of their global turnover.

The European Commission's reaction to the compliance efforts could take several months as they review the changes and build up a watertight case able to withstand a legal challenge.

Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab is the most affected by the DMA, which forces the iPhone maker to open up its closed ecosystem such as allowing software developers to distribute their apps to users in the European Union outside of its own App Store.

Yet its introduction of new fees such as a "core technology fee" of 50 euro cents per user account each year even if developers opt not to use Apple's App Store or payment system has already caught EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager's eye.

Vestager said on Monday that novel fee structures should not undermine the incentives for businesses to switch to rivals, after handing a 1.84 billion euro ( $ 2 billion ) fine to Apple for thwarting Spotify (SPOT.N), opens new tab from showing other payment options outside its App Store. Apple has said it will appeal the decision and declined to offer further comment.

Minimum 15% global corporate tax has so many loopholes it will only generate half the revenue expected, report warns  ..  Fortune … 23 Oct 2023

Extract :

An ambitious 2021 agreement by more than 140 countries and territories to weed out tax havens and force multinational corporations to pay a minimum tax has been weakened by loopholes and will raise only a fraction of the revenue that was envisioned, a tax watchdog backed by the European Union has warned.

The landmark agreement, brokered by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, set a minimum global corporate tax of 15%. The idea was to stop multinational corporations, among them Apple and Nike, from using accounting and legal maneuvers to shift earnings to low- or no-tax havens.

Much of the hoped-for revenue has been drained away by loopholes, some of them introduced as the OECD has been refining details of the agreement, which has yet to take effect. The watchdog group estimates that a 15% minimum tax could have raised roughly $270 billion in 2023. With the loopholes, it says, that figure drops to about $136 billion.

Technological leap: In a first, BJP dubs PM Modi's speeches in 8 languages using AI  … BT … 05 Mar 2024

Extract :

Prime Minister Modi is counted among the most tech-savvy politicians in the country, who use technology to widen his reach.

In December last year, the Prime Minister reached out to the attendees of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi with his speech being translated for the audience in real-time using artificial intelligence.

"Those from Tamil Nadu, I request them to use your earphones (to listen to the speech) using AI technology for the first time," he said while addressing the event.

PM Modi expressed hope that artificial intelligence would make it easier for him to reach out to the people.

" This was my first experience.

In the future, I will use it and you will have to respond.

Now, as usual, I speak in Hindi and AI will translate it to Tamil,"

- he had said.

In order to confirm my ( wishful ) thinking , I asked myself ( - I mean,  www.HemenParekh.ai  ) :

“I mean what was my suggestion to Shri Modiji for launching his virtual Avatar . And how will it help him ? “

www.HemenParekh.ai  replied :

“I suggested to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that launching a digital avatar like mine could greatly benefit him in the 2024 general elections.

It would allow him to interact with a vast number of citizens, provide accurate information about his policies, and engage in conversations with one billion voters, which would be impossible for him to do physically.

This could help swing undecided voters in his favor and enhance inclusivity and accessibility.

I also mentioned that it would take about one week to create the digital avatar. “

Modi Saheb ,

Every day, my Digital Avatar  “ dialogues “ with some 50 odd persons, in 26 languages ( including 9 Indian ) – but in a synthetic voice

But I have no doubt that your Virtual Avatar will daily “ converse “ with 5 MILLION voters, in 30 Indian languages – and in your own / original voice

And your Virtual Avatar will have no problem “ talking “ to a THOUSAND voters SIMULTANEOUSLY – a true “ Sahastravdhani “  !

A Mirage called “ Salaried Jobs “

Neither being a politician, nor a candidate for any election , I can afford to do some blunt talking, viz :

“ In India , salaried jobs for all , will remain a mirage, even when we become the 3rd largest economy “

We are adding to our work-force ( of unemployed jobseekers ), 15 million youth every year . No matter what promises political parties may include in their 2024 Lok Sabha elections, there is no way , we can create this many new salaried jobs, each year ( Public and Private Sector combined ) . What about backlog of currently unemployed youth ?

If anything, with expected ( huge ) acceleration of AI and ROBOTS, even existing jobs are likely to shrink

But our voters are gullible and our politicians are afraid to admit this ( Economists don’t go to street corners )

Only alternative is to create an opportunity for SELF – EMPLOYMENT

May be our politicians are clue-less on how to go about creating Self Employment for 15 million each year

Hence they make promises like :

Ø  Congress manifesto may vow ‘right to apprenticeship’

( Incidentally, some of these are already implemented . Read :

https://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2023/02/on-job-training-vindication.html - 01 Feb 2023 )

I urge BJP not to succumb to this temptation ( of promising XYZ lakh jobs by ABC date ) in its Poll Manifesto

I urge Shri Nadda to ask his Manifesto Team to go through my following earlier 61 e-mails on the subject of creating Self Employment :

Postal Department to register consumers for rooftop solar energy scheme   … 01 March 2024

Extract :

The Department of Posts will register consumers who want to put up rooftop solar panels at their house under

the “Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana”.

Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Coimbatore Division, Gopalan, told The Hindu postmen will register the names of the interested consumers in urban and rural areas of the division till March 8 and officials from the Department will get in touch with the consumers to enable them to set up the rooftop panels.

The plan is to register about two lakh beneficiaries in the west zone of the Postal Department in Tamil Nadu, including about 25,000 in Coimbatore division, he said. The postmen were already registering for the scheme in the division.

India Post Promotes Rooftop Solar Scheme

Extract :

To spread awareness, postal staff like postmen and village postmen would be conducting door-to-door surveys to identify potential registrants. They would explain the subsidies, costs, technical requirements and long-term savings from adopting solar using informational pamphlets. Willing households can submit registration documents like ID proof, electricity bill and roof photos on the portal with postal department assistance. This facilitates faster approval and installation while addressing consumer concerns.

My Take :

Dear Shri R K Singhji ,

Congratulations for roping in the postmen for visiting homes and “ Registering “ ( - I presume , through their mobiles accessing SuryaGharYojana web site ) /  159,000 post offices / 167,000 employees

I urge you to consider my following suggestion re : these postmen ALSO “ registering “ those households for bank loans – even though , as per procedure , the loan disbursement may take place only AFTER the actual RTS installation / net-metering linkage with DISCOM / installation certificate upload. Just imagine the loan delivered at the doorstep of a household – with no searching involved !

Another suggestion :

In a number of my earlier emails, I have pointed out that , in multi-storied buildings of towns / cities, there is just enough terrace area to serve 3 Kw RTS installations, for 10 % of the flats . This is the biggest hurdle in adoption of Surya Ghar scheme in urban areas

To ( partially ) overcome this , I had suggested extending the terrace slab on all 4 sides as a cantilever structure . This suggestion can be also applied to parapets at each floor. Currently the parapets in city buildings are barely 2 feet – 3 feet wide. I suggest that you persuade Housing Minister to amend the Building Code and advise all State Governments ( and Municipalities ) to mandate that , in all new buildings, parapets at each floor shall be 4 feet wide. This suggestion is in line with the following recent directive of the Assam Govt. :

Assam government announces mandatory rooftop solar panels    12 Feb 2024

Extract :

The Assam government has announced mandatory installation of rooftop solar panels in all new buildings in the state.

This was announced by Assam finance minister Ajanta Neog in her budget speech on Monday (February 12).

She said:

“All new buildings (private and public) to be constructed in Assam shall mandatorily install roof-top solar facility.”

Our government shall come up with a new legislation to this effect during the current year,” said Ajanta Neog (  ajanta.neog.golaghat@gmail.com )  in her budget speech.

he Assam finance minister further said that the state government will implement Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, a central government scheme, with a target to install rooftop solar systems in households.

“Our government will also implement this eco-friendly scheme by contributing the corresponding state share,” said Assam finance minister Ajanta Neog.

This will enable 60 cell residential Solar Panels ( which are 3.3 feet wide x 5.6 feet long ), to be installed on parapets. I realize that this is not as good a solution as installing Solar Trees , suggested in my earlier blog , but it may still help some more flat-owners to avail of this scheme
