Extract from the article:

The Supreme Court revealed that in 2023, over 2,000 criminal cases involving Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) were resolved.

The court's affidavit highlighted the filing of 1,746 new criminal cases against these political figures.

Additionally, it was noted that 501 candidates with pending criminal cases are participating in the Lok Sabha elections during the initial phases.

This data sheds light on the prevalent issue of criminalization in politics and the significant number of legal challenges faced by elected representatives.

My Take:

A.    Dance of Democracy

In my blog from 2017 titled "Dance of Democracy,"

I delved into the alarming statistics of criminal cases against politicians. I had highlighted the prediction of a considerable percentage of MLAs with pending criminal cases contesting state elections, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in our political system.

The current situation, as revealed by the recent Supreme Court disclosure, validates the concerns raised earlier. The persisting trend of candidates with criminal backgrounds participating in elections underscores the necessity for stringent measures to uphold the purity of democratic processes.

B.    Model Code of Hypocrite Conduct

In another blog post from 2017, "Model Code of Hypocrite Conduct,"

I discussed the issue of criminal charges against legislators. The blog pondered on the number of tainted legislators and the potential implications of their disqualification due to criminal convictions.

The Supreme Court's directive to expedite the trials of lawmakers facing criminal cases resonates with the urgency highlighted in my previous blog.

The call for establishing special courts to swiftly address these cases aligns with the solution proposed earlier to streamline legal proceedings concerning elected representatives.

Call to Action:

To the Chief Justices of High Courts and concerned authorities, it is imperative to heed the Supreme Court's call to expedite the legal proceedings against sitting and ex-legislators facing criminal charges.

Establishing Special Courts dedicated to resolving these cases promptly is crucial to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

Let us work together to address the issue of criminalization in politics and promote transparency and ethical conduct among our elected officials.
