Welcome
to the 8-hour commute / 11 sept 2020
Extract :
With local trains still restricted to essential workers, eight and nine hour
commutes have become part of the new normal for thousands like Prajapati.
Even those who stay relatively close to their place of work, are
spending close to 8 hours
a day commuting

As far as I can see , this nightmare is only going to get worse as
economic activities pick-up once again ( quite possibly, with a vengeance, to
recoup the lost business ) .
Millions cannot afford private cars and there is no way to observe
“ Social Distancing “ in local trains – metros – public transport buses
Considering that most office / factory workers in Mumbai ( and
most of our Metros ), need to travel less than 10 km ( one way ) , I strongly
believe that :
Ø In all cities, we
should create dedicated Bike
Lanes
Ø Subsidize purchase of
bikes
Following are my old blog / email on this proposal :
A Radical Radial
Revolution ……………………………………………………………..
[ 18 Aug 2016 ]
Extract
:
Ø Cambridge ( USA ) based GeoOrbital has come
out with a unique bicycle wheel for replacing the Front Wheel of any standard (
26 " / 28 " ) existing bicycle , to convert it into an " Electric Bicycle " in ONE minute and without any tools !
Ø Changing back to original Front Wheel of your vintage bicycle ,
will also take no more than ONE minute
Ø GeoOrbital
Front Wheel carries a 500 Watt DC motor / a removable Lithium-Ion
battery / Wheel lock and a Motor
Controller ( a simple thumb activated throttle, which is easily clipped
onto your handlebar )
Ø Battery
needs 3 / 4 hours to recharge ( depending upon capacity ) but gets Regenerative
Charge when you pedal !
Ø It will give a range of 20 miles (50
miles if you pedal for exercise ) with a speed of 20 MPH (
without pedaling )

A
Sensible Solution …………………………………………………………………………………[ 03 Sept 2017 ]
Extract :
Ø Construct 40 Meter wide , light-load-carrying ( LLC ) roads over all the railway tracks
in Mumbai ( may be totaling 100 Km ? ) , exclusively for bicycles ( not for those 17 lakh motor-cycles )
Ø These “ Overhead Bicycle
Tracks ( LLC = OBT ) “ could be covered with
roofs made of TESLA’s Solar Roof-Tiles ,
to generate Solar Power .
Ø In Gujarat , some irrigation canals have been covered by Solar
Panels , in order to generate power and reduce water-loss due to evaporation
Ø With TESLA Roof-Tiles
{ https://www.tesla.com/solarroof
} , there is no need to install
separate conventional Solar Panels
Ø Besides generating Solar Power, the slanting roofs over LLCs ,
will prevent the train tracks below from
getting flooded during heavy rains .
Ø Rain-Water-Collection gutters along both sides of the roof will
enable “ Rain Water Harvesting “
