How to Boost Economy

Dear Shri Jaitleyji :

Over the past few weeks , media ( offline and online ) is full of reports on the slowing down of the economy ( GDP dropping to 5.7 % )

Over the last two days , you have held several meetings with your colleagues ( Ministers / Secretaries / Economic Advisors )

Then yesterday, in a press conference, you said :

“ We have noted all economic indicators and decided on a slew of measures to boost the economy , which will be announced after consulting the PM “

Here are my suggestions :

=======================================================

TAXATION :

Newspapers say that you are NOT in favour of giving relaxations in taxes ( Individual and / or , Corporate ? ) , to stimulate the economy

Despite your well-known views on the matter of taxation , I urge you to , consider my following suggestions :

CreateWealth to Create Jobs   [  26 Feb 2014  ]

Structural  Reforms  [  30  Jan  2016  ]

But , if you are not in a position to raise taxes ( for Infra spending by the government ) or reduce taxes ( to stimulate Consumer spending ) , then the only way out is :

Howto raise $ 500 Billion  [  17  Sept  2017  ]

=======================================================

FUNDS  FOR  INFRASTRUCTURE :

In another blog, I estimated that we need Rs 430 lakh*crore  for funding our Infrastructure projects , and said :

Union Government must NOT even try to fund these projects  !

There is  NO WAY , it can find these kind of money through taxation  !

There will be a revolt  !  “

 Don’t Ask ,How ?  [  07 April 2014  ]

=============================================================================

EXPORTS :

As per recent notification of the World Trade Organization ( WTO ) , India can no longer offer Export Subsidies , as our per capita Gross National Income ( GNI ) , has crossed $ 1,000 for the third year in a row

This will require withdrawal of MEIS ( Merchandise Export from India Scheme ) , which provides a direct subsidy to exporters based on the value of exports

This scheme cover 7,000 items and costs the exchequer around Rs 23,500 crore a year

I suggest following :

#  Allow MSME Exporters to engage TRAINEES ( under the Apprentice Act ) , up to 25 %
    of their current employee-strength

#  Increase training duration to 4 years , without obligation for “ absorbing

#  Let the central government subsidize 75 % of the monthly stipend paid to trainees

( indirectly subsidizing the exporters from that Rs 23,500 crore saved – without
      violating our WTO obligations )

=======================================================

HOW  TO  MAKE  INDIA , “ LOW  COST  ECONOMY “  ? :

Our ultimate survival ( in a “ Dog Eat Dog World “ ) , will solely depend upon making our Economy , a “ Low Cost Economy “ , vis-à-vis rest of the World

There is only ONE WAY to achieve this , as described below :

Howto break the Vicious Circle ?  [  03  July  2016  ]

=======================================================

Dear Shri Jaitleyji :

My only request is that even as you are consulting the Experts ( on how to boost the Economy ) , please also ask a few ORDINARY CITIZENS for their views !

Wherefore Art Thou, O Romeo ?

If Shri B N SriKrishna , heading the Committee on drafting the Data Protection Law , was to read the following news ( source : Eco Times / 19 sept ) , he might cry out :

Wherefore  Art Thou , O  Privacy  ?

A company called Ubiquiti Labs has come out with a fancy looking 2 “ round pendant ( named FrontRow ) , meant to be worn with a lanyard around the neck

It has 2 cameras ; 8 megapixel that faces the World and a 5 megapixel that points towards your body

This light weight and sleek pendant can take photos and videos ( 1080p ) – as you walk around in a garden or in a roomful of people - and live-stream to Facebook, Twitter and Youtube , via Bluetooth or Wi Fi , and has 50 hours of standby battery life , which you can charge via USB

I am sure , it is only a matter of time before  FrontRow  can connect up with latest Apple Smart Watch , which carries e-SIM and does not require you to carry your mobile in your pocket , in order to make / receive calls

And how long before  FrontRow  connects up with your Augumented Reality ( AR ) headset ? Or face recognition feature of iPhone X  ?

And pre-loaded with Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligent face recognition app “ Seeing AI “ ?

And preloaded with your Aadhar Card ID or with Google’s just released Mobile Wallet app . Tez  ?

The “ and “ are endless  !

Just ask those thousands of Chinese hardware enthusiasts and Indian software geeks who must have thought of all of these possibilities before I did !

Will that proposed Data Protection Law tell girls around the World :

“ Sorry !  You cannot wear  FrontRow  around your neck or as a tiara on your forehead “

Do not be surprised if those geeks have anticipated just such a possibility and started morphing  FrontRow  into a tattoo patch called “ ShingarBindi “

!

Scott McNally ( one time CEO of Sun Micro ) had seen this future and said :

“ Privacy is dead . Period . Get over it “

Where will SoBo park its cars ?

This is the headline of a news report appearing in DNA ( 16 Sept )

It reads :

=======================================================

Of the total 28 applications - 19 housing societies an 9 commercial establishments – only ONE EACH has been granted an NOC currently

A senior civic official from from the A ward , on condition of anonymity , said that despite an impressive response from residents , there is delay in implementation due to lack of clarity

“ If vehicles are found parked along the road even after 8 am , there is no clarity on what happens to them . .. If the civic body tows away the vehicles , where will we keep them ? “  , said the official

Initially , the residents association of A ward had also raised questions and demanded clarity in the policy and had written to the civic chief , but had not received a reply

No surprise there  !

What can you expect when the policy ignores the main issue , viz:

There is just no equitable manner / criteria by which you can “ ration /allocate “ a parking space , anywhere in Mumbai where 9 lakh 4 wheelers and 17 lakh 2 wheelers are fighting for ( may be ) , ONE LAKH parking spaces on public roads !

To know what you can expect , read :

But , if  BMC / Maharashtra Government are serious about a solution , they should read :

Too Late ? As always !

In my blog ( 21 April 2017 ) , I had suggested setting up at the Centre , a Minister in charge of Technology Evaluation and Acquisition

In that blog ( sent as E Mail to Central Ministers ) , I had recommended investigating / evaluating , some 11 / 12 technologies , which are under development in different parts of the World and which could provide solutions to some of our very pressing NATIONAL PROBLEMS

One of these listed by me was :

Rapid charging ( within 5 minutes )  Lithium Ion Batteries used in Electric Cars ( current batteries take 5 / 7 hours for full charging ! ) , under development by an Israeli Start Up called “  StoreDot  “

Unfortunately , in my email , I forgot to provide the following address of  StoreDot :

( StoreDot Ltd. I 3 Shenkar St. Herzeliya I Israel 4672503 / Call Us: +972 3 5097710
Fax: +972 9 7677937 I Email: info@store-dot.com )

Today’s DNA ( 18 Sept ) carries a report titled :

Daimler enters super-fast battery charging tech

and that’s why Daimler is investing in Israeli start up  StoreDot , which is a company working on ground breaking developments in electric vehicle battery technology ….

But as ranges of over 300 miles are now being achieved by the likes of TESLA , it seems the emphasis might be shifting to charging times .

And that’s where  StoreDot  comes in because it’s working on developing a way an electric vehicle can be fully recharged in as little as  FIVE MINUTES

Will we find ourselves “ too late “ also for those other 10 technologies recommended by me for evaluation ?

When will learn to do “ Business @ the Speed of Thought “ , advocated by Bill Gates , many years back ?

Not exactly BHIM 4.0

But getting very close  !

Yesterday , Google launched Mobile Payment App “ Tez “ , riding on UPI ( Universal Payment Interface )

Today’s newspapers had following to write :

ECONOMIC TIMES [ 19 Sept ] :

Designed in a  CHAT-LIKE INTERFACE , Google released the app on Android as well as iOS on Monday

Caesar Sengupta , V-P, Next Billion Users , Google , said, “ Tez has been made in India and will make payments as easy as cash

Tez will be available in 7 Indian languages…….

“ The time has come with application as simple as this that what started as a compulsion becomes a matter of convenience and eventually a matter of spending habit as far as Indian people are concerned “, said Jaitley

Google has enabled merchants to use the Tez platform to receive payments directly through the app but promised only businesses that consumers transact with will be able to use the feature and there will be “ no spamming “

Sengupta added that Google is also working on integrating credit and debit card payments through Tez and will enable it later this year

HINDUSTAN TIMES [ 19 Sept ] :

It is NOT a digital wallet , requiring a constant top-up of cash

Instead , Tez works with all the 50 + UPI-enabled banks , so that money stays in users’ bank accounts until they need to use it

Tez users continue to earn interest from their banks and have their deposits backed by bank security guarantees

BUSINESS LINE [ 19 Sept ] :

Diana Layfield, Vice President , Head of Finance and Commerce Products of Google’s Next Billion Users team , later told reporters that Google sees itself competing against cash

“ We don’t see ourselves competing against other players . Our competition is  cash “ , Diana said

Layfield also said Google is not looking to monetize Tez for now . She said customers of 55 Indian banks on the UPI platform can now use the app

Caesar Sengupta , Vice President of the Next Billion Users team at Google said ,

This starts us on a journey  to make digital payments simpler and more accessible to everyone “

BUSINESS  LINE [  20  Sept  ] :

Diana Layfield said :

“ Google is also working on integrating third-party mobile wallets with Tez so that users needn’t require multiple payment apps

We felt the payments space was going to be exciting and this is the economy which will digitize relatively rapidly . There was a sense that this could add enormous value to India “

Google is also integrating Tez with Google Maps so that when users search for a place , Maps can suggest stores in that area that accept Tez . The stores will be able to make an offer to users and users in turn will be able to make inquiries
“ There’s a whole another set of things that you can add to the app “ , Layfield said

I believe the “ journey “ that  Sengupta  talks of , will run along the lines of :

What makes me think so ?

I believe Sundar Pichai read my email to him, in which, among many other things ,  I requested him as follows :

06 Jan 2017

Dear  Sundar  Pichai :

During your interview last evening with Vikram Chandra ( NDTV ) , you said :

I like to work on finding solutions to challenging problems . I like to find solutions that millions of people around the World can use to simplify their lives and empower them

I believe, through use of Aadhar based apps , such solutions can make a huge difference to Education , Healthcare , Economy etc  “

Sundar , all of this was very heartening  !

Here are my suggestions for solving some of those  " CHALLENGING  PROBLEMS " :

F  ]    Simplification of  MOBILE WALLET  , which requires  NO TYPING  into the App  /  ONLY SPEAKING

Dear Sundar :

Congrats and thanks  !

I urge you to find similar elegant / simple solutions to those other problems listed in my email
