Shop Open 24 / 7 ? Can be a Game Changer !

Economic Times ( 05 July ) reports :

The Maharashtra Government is giving finishing touches to a bill that would allow most shops -  kiranas , tailors , supermarkets etc – in Mumbai to stay open throughout the night , seven days a week

My following blog , show how this initiative could help reduce UNEMPLOYMENT

50 MILLION NEW JOBS in 5 MONTHS ?

It is reported that the Union Cabinet will soon approve a notification which will allow establishments covered by the Shops and Establishment Act to remain open round the clock ( 24 hours )

Currently , if they remain open for 10 / 12 hours , they end up inviting visits by Inspectors of Establishment Department and the Labour Department , to collect their weekly " haftas "

With official sanction of 24 hours , that would go !

And 24 working hours will enable these shopkeepers to compete with those Foreign Companies bringing in 100 % FDI in retail but working for 8 hours / day !

And as soon as one Grocery store starts working longer hours ( even 12 hours ) , most of the neighbourhood stores will follow suit  !

For our 50 million MSMEs to, not only take on these Foreign Giants but to defeat them in competition , is only possible when we stop playing the RETAIL GAME by the Rules of those Foreign Countries , and make them clue-less with our own NEW and OUT-OF-BOX rules !

Possibly half of these may be covered by Factory Act and the remaining half by the Shop and Establishment Act

Between them , they employ 90 % of India's work force of around 500 million

Average of approx 9 persons per MSME

Now , even if only 5 million ( out of 25 million shops ) just add ONE more employee to work longer hours , that would get jobs to 5 million youth !

That is quite a lot !  And without any additional Capital Investment !

Compare this advantage with Capital required to create ONE new job in Start Ups

As per Government , Rs 10,000 cr of " Fund of Funds for Start Ups " , will catalyze an Equity Investment of Rs 60,000 cr , which , in turn will enable raising of Debt of Rs 120,000 cr - totaling Rs 180,000 cr of capital

As per Government , that will generate 18,00,000 jobs ( in 5 years )

That is requirement of Rs 10 LAKH for each new job created in a Start Up !

While welcoming this initiative , I urge the Union Government to take following steps simultaneously , in order to generate , not just 5 million but  50 MILLION  new jobs in the MSME sector ( and without additional funds ! ) :

#   Abolish all visits by Inspectors ( Labour + Shop & Establishment Departments )

#   Allow MSMEs to engage Apprentices under the recently revised Skills Development Regulations / Apprentice Act

#   For them , remove the upper limit ( of Apprentices ) which is maximum of 10 % of employee strength

#   Let them engage Apprentices up to 100 % of their existing employees

#   Let them keep these trainees for 3 years under " Retail Establishment Trainee Scheme "

#   Let the stipend be 100 % ( instead of currently prescribed 60-70-80 % ) of semi Skilled Minimum wages

( Minimum Semi Skilled Wages are approx Rs 6,000 per month - so Shopkeeper need to pay Rs 6000 pm )

#   Concerned State Governments to subsidize 50 % of this stipend (so, Shopkeeper's burden to be  Rs 3,000 pm )

[  STIPEND SUBSIDY DOES NOT VIOLATE WTO  !  ]

To ensure fool-proof  compliance with the number of Trainees engaged and Stipends paid , this Scheme

    ( 24 hr open + 100 % trainees + 100 % Stipend + 50 % Subsidy + 3 year training program + No inspectors ),

will apply ONLY to those Shops which implement , mobile app MAD outlined in my following blog :

Closing in on BHIM V 4.0 !

Of course , it is a matter of time before NPCI launches Voice Activated version of their Mobile Wallet BHIM , as described in  :

How soon , can be guessed by the following report in Times of India ( 05 July ) :

=================================

Your face may be the next safe password

Apple Inc. is working on a feature that will let you unlock your iPhone using your face instead of a fingerprint.

For its redesigned iPhone, set to go on sale later this year, Apple is testing an improved security system that allows users to log in, authenticate payments, and launch secure apps by scanning their face, according to people familiar with the product.

This is powered by a new 3-D sensor, added the people, who asked not to be identified discussing technology that’s still in development. The company is also testing eye-scanning to augment the system, one of the people said.

The sensor’s speed and accuracy are focal points of the feature.

It can scan a user’s face and unlock the iPhone within a few hundred milliseconds, the person said.

It is designed to work EVEN IF THE DEVICE IS LAYING FLAT ON A TABLE, rather than just close up to the face.

The feature is still being tested and may not appear with the new device. However, the intent is for it to replace the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, according to the person.

Apple is not the first to use different forms of biometric authentication. In its latest phones, Samsung included iris scanners that let users unlock their phones and make payments by scanning their eyes. Samsung’s feature launched to poor reviews as users were able to trick the sensor with printed photo copies of a person’s eyes. Apple’s sensor has 3-D depth perception, which means the system is less likely to be duped by 2-D pictures.

Preloaded BHIM ?

Gadget,ndtv.com ( 04 July ) carries following news item :

Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G With BHIM App Launched in India

It goes on to read :

================================

Domestic mobile brand Karbonn Mobiles on Tuesday launched a new smartphone in the country, the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G.

The smartphone's USP is its UPI integration in the form of the preloaded BHIM app, and inclusion of a fingerprint sensor for payment authentication.

Elaborating on the UPI payments integration on the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G, the domestic brand at its launch event in New Delhi said that the BHIM app's access and securitisation mechanisms have been integrated at a firmware level, making it safer to use.

NPCI officials were also present at the launch event.

The company also claims that the preloaded BHIM app has been optimised for user experience and app performance on the K9 Kavach 4G smartphone. The company is also touting the security benefits of the fingerprint sensor.

Other OS level integrations on the Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G that are being touted by the company include e-KYC and Aadhaar authentication, Digilocker and e-Gov service access, the ability to perform person-to-person transactions directly from the phonebook, contextual payments within messenger apps, as well as bill payments and utility services.

Do not get surprised if Karbonn offers to develop for NPCI , BHIM ( V 4.0 ) as described in :

Fast Forward to IoV ?

Times of India ( 02 July ) , carries following news report :

“ UK plans digital fences to thwart terror trucks “

The UK government is planning to install high-tech digital force fields around iconic buildings and bridges to block terror attacks using vehicles in the country.

The UK’s department for transport (DfT) is investigating the use of internet-based solutions to counter a recent spate of terror attacks using cars and vans to plough down pedestrians in busy areas, according to ‘The Times’.

According to the report, UK ministers are interested in the development of technologies such as “geo-fencing” systems that employ satellites to create electronic boundaries around specific sites.

It would connect with on-board computers in cars to prevent unauthorised vehicles gaining access or slowing them to walking space

DfT confirmed that the government was also looking at the use of technology to pre- vent attacks using vehicles as weapons.

A DfT spokesperson said: “Departments across government have been working together with the police and security service to explore what more can be done to prevent the malicious use of vehicles as a weapon.

The DfT is exploring what role vehicle safety technologies can play in mitigating this. This work is at an early stage.”

Sweden is already adapting the technology to vehicles in response to an attack in Stockholm in April when a truck was driven into pedestrians on a busy shopping street, killing four people.

Vehicle manufacturers including Scania and Volvo are involved in trials of the technology. A British firm is also reportedly working on similar technology by using telematics — black box-style devices — to shut down a car or lorry when it has been hijacked.

In my blog ,

Internet  of  Vehicles ( IoV )   [ 04  March 2017 ] “ ,

among the various justifications , for embedding ALL vehicles with GPS enabled and Internet connected SENSORS, being controlled remotely ,  I had also listed :

“ Increasing road accidents , maiming and killing people or damaging property “

Dear Shri  Gadkariji :

I once again urge you to make this technology ( Internet of Vehicles ) , the CORNER STONE of your ,

Elon : Hesitation Can Hurt !

For a few months now , I have been tweeting to Elon Musk , to hurry up with his plans for manufacture of Tesla Electric Cars in India

May be he was evaluating his entry strategy in the context of “ China vs India “

Now comes following news ( Bloomberg / 28 June 2017 ) :

As Elon Musk races to finish building the world’s biggest battery factory in the Nevada desert, China is poised to leave him in the dust.
Chinese companies have plans for additional factories with the capacity to pump out more than 120 gigawatt-hours a year by 2021, according to a report published this week by Bloomberg Intelligence.

That’s enough to supply batteries for around 1.5 million Tesla Model S vehicles or 13.7 million Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrids per year, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
By comparison, when completed in 2018, Tesla Inc.’s Gigafactory will crank out up to 35 gigawatt-hours of battery cells annually.

But then India is not “ hesitating “ either !

Following is the description of following Youtube video :

Indian Space Research Organisation's Indian Space Research Organisation had developed Lithium Ion battery technology for space application. Now government of India is planning to give this technology to interested Indian companies so that large volume of battery production would significantly reduce the cost !

The video says :

The Indian Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has asked ISRO to share the battery technology  to all interested , Public and Private Companies . The rationale being mass production can reduce the cost significantly

Mahindra Renault , Hyundai , Nissan, Tata Motors , High Energy Batteries, BHEL and Indian Oil have shown interest in producing the indigenous Li-ion batteries

BHEL and ISRO could possibly sign deals in this regard soon

But Indian Government aims to have multiple companies producing the batteries to drive down the
Cost

This is what I repeatedly urged the NDA government through my following blogs ( sent as emails ) :

·         From  Elon to  Ion

·         Enable  Elon to  Catalyse

·         Welcome ,Elon Musk !

Seems like Shri Gadkariji does not want to be waiting for ever for Elon to make up his mind !

Shri Gadkariji !

Congrats for pushing commercialization of this NON – SPACE technology of ISRO – even as Elon tries to make up his mind !
