To beat OR not to beat ?

For India’s EV manufacturers, that question is :

To beat AND how to beat ?  { TESLA, that is ! }

Transport minister Nitin Gadkari confirms Tesla’s entry in India by early 2021  /  Live Mint – 28 Dec

Extract :

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways and the Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises confirmed that electric vehicles manufacturer Tesla will make an entry in India by early 2021.

According to a report by Indian Express, the transport minister claimed that Tesla will start operations in the country early next year. The confirmation comes days after a report suggested that Tesla will start bookings for the Model 3 in India from January and start deliveries by June next year.

Confirming an earlier report, Gadkari claimed that Tesla will start its operations with sales and then look into manufacturing and assembly depending on the demand for the cars.

He also went on to state that, “India is going to become a number 1 manufacturing hub for auto in five years."

In October, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had confirmed that they will be introducing the brand in India by next year.

Elon Musk, in response to a tweet promised to introduce the brand in India by 2021. The new report confirms the same. The company had plans to bring the brand to India in 2016. Tesla even began bookings for its Model 3. However, the company decided not to launch it due to lack of proper infrastructure.

Tesla will be importing the cars as completely built units (CBU) and won't be selling them via dealerships. Instead, the company will focus on online sales.

The electric vehicle company is expected to debut in India with their most affordable offering Model 3. The car is expected to start at a price of 55 lakh.

Notes from this news report :

Ø  Considering a cost of electricity at Rs 10 / kwh, it costs just a little more than Rs 300 to fully charge the Nexon’s 30.2 Kwh battery. Assuming a 200 km real world range ( as against the rated 312 km range ), we get a per kilometer cost of a measly Rs 1.5 / km, very conservatively

Ø  You can charge an EV using a standard wall socket, but it’ll be like filling a bucket one drop at a time

Ø  Globally, 70% of EVs are charged at homes and offices using AC slow charging, and India can expect to do likewise

===================================================

( source : How Tata made Nexon EV a success story  /  Business Line – 29 Dec )

Extract :

Ø  The impressive part of the story is that of the total sales of 2,959 units, the Nexon EV accounted for 2,086 units (2,200 units since the launch) — about 70 per cent of the total industry sales and 4-4.5 times growth for Tata’s EV sales (it started selling Tigor EV before Nexon). Thus, the entire growth of electric car industry has been driven by Nexon EV

Ø  A consumer survey during the conceptual stage revealed that the company should overcome three major barriers to make its EVs attractive. First, electric cars are priced 2-2.5 times higher; and the message was that its EVs should not be priced more than 20-25 per cent as compared to conventional cars. Second, the clear answer for range concerns was that buyers will not show interest if the range was less than 200 km

Ø  “We took these boundary conditions and designed the Nexon EV to bust all the key myths, and it was done within just 14-16 months. We brought a vehicle that was tailor-made to the needs of the customers,” says Chandra.

Ø  The Nexon EV is just 1-1.5 lakh more expensive than the Nexon diesel AMT. In fact, in Delhi, the Nexon EV is cheaper than the diesel AMT variant due to the incentives offered by the governments.

Ø  Today, if anyone is planning to by a car in 10-15 lakh range in big cities, he/she will definitely consider Nexon EV,” points out Chandra

===================================================

How does Tesla Model 3 compare against India made Electric cars ?

Ø  In USA, Model 3 sells for $ 30,000 ( approx., Rs 21 lakhs )

Ø  If fully imported into India, it will cost the buyer Rs 55-60 lakhs ( with all duties / taxes )

Ø  At such a high price, there can be no more than a few hundred buyers at the most. For a few hundred or even a few thousands, Elon Musk is unlikely to set up in India, a full-fledged manufacturing plant

Ø  But, by 2024, he expects Li battery prices to drop to $ 50 / Kwh as against current $ 120-130 / Kwh

Ø  By that time, he may also come up with a model with a 15 Kwh battery

Ø  Mass produced, such a model might end up with a sale price of Rs 10 lakh

Ø  That would compete with, Mahindra e-Verito ( 21 Kwh battery ) selling for Rs 9- 10 lakhs

How can Indian EV manufacturers prepare for such an eventuality ?

Ø  Mahindra is about to launch its EV Quadricycle ATOM ( 15 Kwh battery ) priced at Rs 3 – 5 lakh

Ø  Some Indian EV maker may replicate the Chinese Wuling Mini ( 9.5 Kwh Battery ) and selling for Rs 3.5 L in China ( see table at : Mahesh Babu is on right track / 18 Dec 2020 ). Today, in China there are a number of small EV cars selling for Rs 4-5 lakh

Ø  Some Indian Startup may get technology from ISRO for its Solar Roof Top Panels for EVs and its green / small Li-ion Battery, to come up with a car that does NOT need charging from a roadside battery charging station ! And selling for Rs 6 -7 lakhs ( compared with just announced solar charging APTERA – USA -  due for delivery after 8-10 months and selling for Rs 18.5 Lakh ).

Dear Shri Gadkariji,

I strongly believe this last option ( Solar Roof Power charged EV ) is the most desirable / viable option for our country where there are less than 2000 Battery Charging Stations. Not only will it remove the Range Anxiety from the minds of the buyers but offer a car that is cheaper than an equivalent Petrol – Diesel car and whose running cost could be Rs 1.5 / km as compared with Rs 7 / km for a petrol car.

When such car arrives, there will be no need to subsidize / incentivize, either the buyers or the car manufacturers !

Only such a Solar Powered car ( with a 10 Kwh Li battery ) can realize India’s dream of 30 % EV population by 2030.

Govt to launch new quarterly jobs survey from March 2021     /  21NewsTV – 28 Dec

Extract :

The federal government will launch a new quarterly employment survey from March next year that can amalgamate two current surveys; the Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) and the Space Body Institution Survey (AFES).

A extra expansive model of the prevailing enumeration workout routines, the brand new survey is prone to be christened the
All India Quarterly Base Institution Survey (AIQBES), and is geared toward plugging the evaluation gaps in understanding the real employment situation within the nation.

A senior labour bureau official, who will lead the efforts, mentioned current surveys had a restricted scope in that they solely covered just a few formal sector institutions and had been restricted to covering those who employed greater than 10 individuals.

In contrast, the brand new survey seeks to incorporate
informal establishments, cover those with less than 10 workers, and impact a 10-fold improve in sample size

“The federal government thought it prudent to scale up the sample size so that a complete employment survey is carried out and which displays the right image of employment within the nation,” mentioned D P S Negi, chief labour commissioner.

The Quarterly Employment Survey was halted in 2017 when
the National Statistical Office launched the primary Periodic Labour Power Survey. Nonetheless, the S P Mookherjee-led knowledgeable group roped in to launch the AIQBES, is known to have argued that a quarterly, establishment-based survey, fairly than an annual, family survey can be more practical in ascertaining the employment and unemployment scenario within the nation.

===================================================

Dear Shri Negiji,

Without doubt this proposed AIQBES will be an improvement over the past QES ( halted in 2017 )

But still, it will have following limitations :

Ø  Even with a much bigger SAMPLE SIZE , results may not reflect “ right image of employment “ within the nation , considering that we have 65 million MSME employing 130 million persons ( ave of 2 / unit ) . It is impossible to cover all of these MANUALLY

Ø  Even among the large organized sector units, it may not be possible to cover even 10 % of these MANUALLY

Ø  If the enumerators were to use paper forms for compiling data , that would require a huge amount of data to be digitized through manual input – taking months

Ø  By the time survey results get published , ( usually 3 / 4 quarters after the exercise ), the results would be only “ historic / obsolete “ – not of much use for taking quick remedial actions

Ø  Manual survey would require employing thousands of persons ( needing training )

Ø  I would urge you to go through my following earlier e mails on the subject and consider gradual implementation of :

Ø  From BAD to MAD …………………………….[ 01 June 2016 ]

Ø  MAD goes to Mandi ……………………………[ 02  Jan  2020 ]
