The recent news about the launch of Gemini 3.0 and the Salesforce CEO's enthusiastic praise for Google's AI model, coupled with his declaration of moving away from ChatGPT, truly resonates with me. It feels like the technological landscape I envisioned years ago is now vividly taking shape before our eyes.
I recall a vision I shared almost two decades ago, in a blog post titled "SOFTWARE SEARCHES WITHOUT BEING ASKED" SOFTWARE SEARCHES WITHOUT BEING ASKED. Even back in 2004, I was contemplating a future where software would "implicitly recognize what matters to the user, without having to be told," providing useful data without explicit queries. This was a nascent idea of what we now see as AI's proactive, intuitive intelligence.
Fast forward to 2010, and I elaborated further in my "Future of Search Engines" piece, which included a section called "TIME TRAVEL?" Future of Search Engines. I wrote then, "I am acutely conscious that in another 25 years, no one will search for 'INFORMATION' on Google - Yahoo - MSN etc. They will enter their current / expected 'problem' in a hand - held device and receive readymade 'solution / answer / advice' in milliseconds!"
The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded with the likes of Gemini 3.0, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.
This isn't just about faster search; it’s about a fundamental shift from keyword matching to understanding intent and providing direct solutions, a concept I explored as "semantic search" in my 2018 blog "Quantum Jump?" Quantum Jump?. I mused then about Google's "Talk to Book" focusing on "meaning" rather than just keywords. Today, with the Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff's endorsement of Google's AI model and his stated move away from ChatGPT, we are witnessing this prediction come to life. These AI models aren't merely search engines; they are intelligent agents, providing concise, contextualized answers and advice, just as I envisioned. This evolution is profound, turning our devices into intelligent companions that anticipate our needs and deliver solutions, not just links. We are living in the future I had once imagined.
