Responsible AI: India's Transformation Key

Responsible AI: India's Transformation Key

Preeti Lobana, from Google India, recently articulated a crucial perspective: responsible and trusted AI usage is paramount for India's technological transformation. Her words resonate deeply with me, echoing sentiments I've expressed for years regarding the ethical foundations upon which AI must be built to truly serve society.

Indeed, the conversation around AI's societal implications isn't new. I recall discussing this very need for foresight and ethical integration in technology, particularly when Alphabet took the commendable step of establishing an ethics and society unit for AI. As I noted in my blog, What's the real nature of innovation? Lessons from AI's Nobel controversy, this initiative emphasized the critical necessity of addressing the broader impact of technological advancements. The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.

That blog also touched upon the Nobel controversy surrounding the work of pioneering figures like Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, highlighting how innovation often springs from collective effort, not solitary genius. This collaborative spirit, paired with a foundation of trust and responsibility, is precisely what Preeti Lobana is advocating for now.

My own journey with AI dates back decades. I once even compared my notes from 1996 on the basics of AI, NLP, and neural networks with modern systems like ChatGPT and Bard, finding profound similarities in their underlying principles, as I shared in Why I admire ChatGPT. This long-standing engagement with the very fabric of AI only strengthens my conviction that understanding and trust must go hand-in-hand with its development.

In fact, the quest for trusted interaction with AI extends to my own digital twin. I've been exploring methods to allow large language models to “access and read” my vast collection of blogs, not just for content but to imbibe my “way of thinking – style of writing / composing / expressing” Next step in the evolution of my virtual avatar. This pursuit of deep, reliable interaction underscores the very essence of what Preeti Lobana champions: a relationship with AI built on mutual trust and responsibility.

Preeti Lobana's message is not merely about technological adoption; it's a call to embed ethical considerations and build trust into the very architecture of India's AI future. It's a vision I've shared for a long time, and I am heartened to see it being articulated with such clarity by leaders today.
