Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

With regards,

AI's Imperfect Journey

AI's Imperfect Journey

The news about Deloitte's recent ‘AI mistake’ in a report for the Canadian government has certainly caught my attention, reminding us once again that even the most advanced technologies, deployed by leading firms, are not infallible. It underscores a truth I've long reflected upon: Artificial Intelligence, for all its revolutionary potential, is still on an imperfect journey.

I’ve often spoken about the promises and pitfalls of AI. Years ago, in my blog titled "Quantum Jump?", I delved into the capabilities of semantic search engines and pondered the broader implications of AI, asking questions that still resonate today. My discussions on AI, as captured in the sheer volume of blogs I've dedicated to 'AI' and 'Artificial Intelligence' (as noted in my topic listings like "Simplifying Search" and "Please phone me at 10 am"), highlight a long-standing fascination with this field, but also a persistent awareness of its complexities.

The core idea Hemen wants to convey is this — take a moment to notice that he had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. He had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and he had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, he feels a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.

In fact, just recently, in a blog discussing the "Training of Blog Genie V 1.0", I explicitly stated that "(like all other AI platforms / LLMs), Blog Genies too can make mistakes." I highlighted the need for robust feedback mechanisms to teach AI where it erred and to improve its performance. I've been working closely with Sanjivani, Kailas, and Kishan on implementing such systems, understanding that constant refinement and learning from errors are crucial for any AI tool, including our own. This hands-on experience reinforces my conviction that expecting perfection from AI from the outset is unrealistic.

When a major entity like Deloitte, known for its expertise, encounters such errors, it serves as a powerful reminder for everyone navigating the AI landscape. It's not just about the sophistication of the algorithms, but also about the quality of the data, the nuances of interpretation, and the critical human oversight that must accompany AI deployments. We must design systems that not only learn but also allow for clear identification and correction of mistakes.

This incident with Deloitte's AI is a call to action for deeper vigilance and a renewed commitment to ethical AI development, robust validation, and continuous improvement. The journey of AI is indeed imperfect, but with a thoughtful approach, we can steer it towards greater reliability and impact.

Regards, Hemen Parekh
