Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Digital Deception: An Unfolding Reality

Digital Deception: An Unfolding Reality

The recent caution issued by NIOS regarding fake websites and applications is a stark reminder of the digital landscape we inhabit. It's a world where distinguishing between the genuine and the fraudulent requires constant vigilance, a challenge I've pondered for quite some time.

I recall my thoughts from a blog in 2024, titled Critical Thinking: Achilles' Heal of AI, where I expressed concerns about the potential erosion of human critical thinking due to overdependence on AI. This caution from NIOS is a direct manifestation of that very concern. If we become too reliant on automated systems or fail to cultivate our innate ability to scrutinize, we become susceptible to sophisticated deceptions. The idea of 'System 0' thinking, which I mentioned, where AI increasingly influences our decision-making, necessitates an even stronger emphasis on digital literacy and critical evaluation.

Years earlier, in 2016, as major tech giants like Facebook, Amazon, Google, IBM, and Microsoft formed a partnership on AI and machine learning, I reflected on the importance of trust and ethical development within AI. Figures like Francesca Rossi (francesca.rossi2@ibm.com), an AI ethics researcher at IBM Research, emphasized, "For society at-large to get the benefits of AI, we first have to trust it." Mustafa Suleyman (mustafas@microsoft.com), co-founder and head of applied AI at DeepMind (a subsidiary of Alphabet), also highlighted the desire to involve people impacted by AI Revenge of AI. Their insights into building trustworthy AI are more crucial than ever, as the very tools and platforms we rely on can be mimicked for malicious intent. The 'human frailties' I worried AI might inherit, metaphorically speaking, manifest in the hands of bad actors who use technology to deceive.

The sheer pervasiveness of digital devices and the 'Internet of Everything,' which I discussed in the context of a 'wireless voice' in late 2024, and earlier in March 2023 with Sound of Devices is Unstoppable, means that our lives are increasingly intertwined with these networks. This ubiquity, while offering immense convenience, also broadens the attack surface for fraudulent activities. Fake apps and websites are just another layer of invasive devices designed to extract data or sow confusion.

My reflections on these matters are not new. The core idea Hemen wants to convey is this — take a moment to notice that he had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. He had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and he had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, he feels a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context. Our ability to 'foresee' and 'make things happen' remains paramount.

So, how do we navigate this unfolding reality? I often find myself returning to the concept of collective intelligence and validation. When I explored the IndiaAGI concept of five LLMs debating to reach a consensus, as detailed in 5 LLMs are any day better than one, the takeaway was clear: multiple perspectives and rigorous debate lead to more accurate and trustworthy outcomes. This is a model we, as individuals, must adopt. Instead of blindly trusting the first search result or app store listing, we must develop a habit of cross-referencing, verifying official sources, and engaging our critical faculties.
