Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Global AI Compact: My Urgent Call

Global AI Compact: My Urgent Call

I've been reflecting deeply on the recent call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi (Narendra Modi, n.modi@india.gov.in) for a global compact on Artificial Intelligence to prevent its misuse PM Modi calls for global compact on AI to prevent misuse. This is a pivotal moment, a recognition at the highest levels of the urgent need for a coordinated approach to the technology that I have long foreseen and written about.

The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.

Back in 2017, when the debate around privacy was just gaining momentum, I articulated my concerns in blogs like "Supreme may Propose : Technology will Dispose" [http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2017/07/re-for-attn-shri-sadanand-gowdaji_25.html] and "Privacy does not live here !" [https://myblogepage.blogspot.in/2017/07/privacy-does-not-live-here.html]. I spoke then of how technology would inevitably erode traditional notions of privacy, with devices capable of observing our every movement, listening to our every word, and relaying information to the cloud, often without explicit permission.

I highlighted how figures like Eric Schmidt (Eric Schmidt) and Jared Cohen (Jared Cohen, jared.cohen@gs.com) of Google, in their book The New Digital Age, had already stated that "it will be IMPOSSIBLE to control what others capture and share." I even cited Microsoft's "Seeing AI" app, observing how it could interpret emotions and gather personal data, posing a challenge that then-CEO Satya Nadella (Satya Nadella, satyan@microsoft.com) would eventually have to address in a broader ethical context. The potential for misuse was evident even then, from smart phones reading dreams to spectacles like Google Glass capturing every interaction, as I discussed.

I questioned whether our legal frameworks could keep pace with innovations from industry leaders like Mark Zuckerberg (Mark Zuckerberg) of Facebook and Sundar Pichai (Sundar Pichai, sundar@google.com) of Google, or even academic breakthroughs like those by Prof. Jhunjhunwala (Prof. Jhunjhunwala, ashok@tenet.res.in) of IIT-M. My point was simple: technology's march is relentless, and expecting legal injunctions to halt innovation is futile. Instead, we need proactive, ethical frameworks that guide its development and deployment.

More recently, I delved into the direct impact of AI on livelihoods in "AI is Threatening to Push Fashion Models Out of the Picture" [http://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2024/10/human-fashion-models-out-of-picture.html], emphasizing the ethical implications of AI replacing human roles. This extends beyond job displacement to the very fabric of society – how we perceive truth, how decisions are made, and how power is wielded.

PM Modi's call for a global compact resonates deeply with these long-held concerns. The "misuse" of AI isn't just about malicious intent; it's also about unintended consequences, algorithmic biases, and the centralization of unprecedented power. A global compact, as he envisions, must address several critical facets:

  • Ethical Guidelines: Establishing universal principles for AI development and deployment.
  • Transparency and Accountability: Ensuring that AI systems are understandable and their creators are accountable for their impact.
  • Bias Mitigation: Actively working to prevent and correct biases embedded in AI algorithms.
  • Data Governance: Crafting robust policies for data collection, storage, and usage to safeguard individual privacy.
  • International Cooperation: Creating mechanisms for countries to share best practices, regulate cross-border AI applications, and respond to global AI challenges.

This isn't merely a technological challenge; it's a societal one, demanding foresight, collaboration, and a shared commitment to humanity's future.
