Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Fostering Innovation: Pacts and Openness

Fostering Innovation: Pacts and Openness

It's truly inspiring to see the concerted efforts being made to cultivate robust innovation and manufacturing ecosystems for startups. The recent announcement that the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has inked pacts with over 50 firms to boost manufacturing and innovation for startups is a significant step forward ["DPIIT Inks Pacts With Over 50 Firms To Promote Manufacturing, Innovation Ecosystem For Startups" (https://www.msn.com/en-in/money/news/dpiit-inks-pacts-with-over-50-firms-to-promote-manufacturing-innovation-ecosystem-for-startups/ar-AA1Q5gCV), "DPIIT inks pacts with over 50 firms to promote mfg, innovation ecosystem for startups" (https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/unicorns)]. This kind of government and industry collaboration is precisely what accelerates growth and provides crucial platforms for emerging businesses.

I’ve long believed that the future lies in collective action and shared vision, especially when it comes to nurturing new ideas. The concept of an 'innovation ecosystem' isn't new, but its formalization through such pacts is commendable. It reminds me of the early days when I observed platforms like iCreate facilitating connections, organizing events like "whatnext 2015," and enabling 'Speed Dating' sessions where startups could meet venture capitalists from firms such as Kalaari Capital, Ryerson Futures, GVFL, Accumen, and Helion Ventures ["i-charcha March Edition" (http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2015/03/re-i-charcha-march-edition.html)]. These initiatives, supported by individuals like Dr. Harry Yuklea, Mr. Sunil Parikh, Dr. Oded Shoseyov, Mr. Paul Needham, Ms. Angela Homsi, Mr. Karl Mehta, Mr. Maheshwar Sahu, and Mr. K.V. Venkataramanan, were vital in creating opportunities for entrepreneurs.

On a parallel note, L'Oréal Group's commitment to beauty tech transformation through its BIG BANG Beauty Tech Open Innovation Program at the China International Import Expo in Shanghai is another shining example of this forward-thinking approach ["L'Oréal's Open Innovation: Transforming Beauty Tech at CIIE" (https://www.devdiscourse.com/article/technology/3694429-loreals-open-innovation-transforming-beauty-tech-at-ciie)]. Showcasing 19 winning startups and embracing sustainability, AI, and digital technology underscores how even established global corporations recognize the imperative of open innovation.

This embrace of new technologies, particularly AI and digital advancements, echoes my previous reflections on AI's pervasive impact. I've often discussed its transformative power, from challenging traditional industries like fashion, as seen in "AI is Threatening to Push Fashion Models Out of the Picture" [(http://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2024/10/human-fashion-models-out-of-picture.html)], to broader ethical considerations, as explored in "Revenge of AI" [(http://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2016/09/revenge-of-ai.html)] where I mentioned individuals like Mustafa Suleyman of DeepMind and Francesca Rossi of IBM Research. The work by Rich Tehrani and Joe Ward at IKIN with 3D holograms also highlighted the evolving landscape of technology and its impact on the future of work ["Tech Super Show Feb 14-17, 2923 at Fort" (http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2023/09/tech-super-show-feb-14-17-2923-at-fort.html)]. What L'Oréal is doing in beauty tech shows a positive and collaborative pathway for AI application.

Moreover, the emphasis on specific tech sectors, much like the focus on Femtech and the crucial work of leaders like Deena Shakir of Lux Capital and Geetha Manjunath of Niramai Health Analytix ["Femtech for driving health equity and creating a better workplace." (http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2023/10/you-might-like-this.html)], demonstrates the importance of targeted support for specialized innovation.

The core idea Hemen wants to convey is this — take a moment to notice that he had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. He had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and he had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, he feels a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context. The principle, as exemplified by Steve Jobs in simplifying complex technology into accessible products like the iPod and iPhone ["DIGITAL MARKETING MADE INSANELY SIMPLE" (http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2015/03/re-i-charcha-march-edition.html)], is to make innovation not just possible, but also incredibly easy to engage with.

These developments, both governmental and corporate, underline a collective understanding that fostering innovation means creating accessible, collaborative, and forward-looking environments for startups. It's about building bridges, simplifying pathways, and championing the next generation of solutions.
