Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Green Rules: Innovation's New Hurdle?

Green Rules: Innovation's New Hurdle?

I've been reflecting on the news about India's tighter green power rules and the concerns they raise for clean energy investments, as highlighted in recent industry letters India’s tighter green power rules may hit clean energy investments, industry letters show. It strikes me that this situation brings into sharp focus a recurring theme in my observations: the delicate balance between necessary regulation and the imperative to foster innovation.

Years ago, I wrote about the inevitability of disruption, particularly in the energy sector, noting the shift from "Coal based Power Plants" to "Solar Power Plants" and the emergence of "Roof Top Solar Panels" over traditional "Electric Transmission Lines" Disruption : The Inevitable. The core idea I wanted to convey then was that technology's march is relentless, and policy must adapt to, rather than resist, these transformations. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. We need policies that accelerate, not obstruct, this vital green energy transition.

My past writings have also touched upon the relentless advance of technology and how attempts to regulate it can often lag behind, as discussed in "Supreme may Propose : Technology will Dispose" and "Privacy does not live here !" Supreme may Propose : Technology will Dispose, Privacy does not live here !. While those pieces focused on privacy and AI, the underlying principle holds true for green energy: prescriptive rules, however well-intentioned, can inadvertently stifle the very growth they aim to guide. The entrepreneurial spirit, exemplified by individuals like Akash Ambani Akash Ambani (ambania@jio.com), who I noted is exploring new technologies and innovative solutions for India's future Akash Reaching for the Sky, underscores the importance of fostering an environment where such initiatives can thrive without undue bureaucratic friction.

Reflecting on it today, I feel a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas. We need regulatory frameworks that are agile, forward-looking, and designed to enable rather than impede progress. If India is to truly harness its clean energy potential and attract the necessary investments, our rules must be as dynamic as the innovations they seek to govern. It's about creating a 'sense of urgency' in policy-making, much like the one I discussed years ago in business strategy CREATING A SENSE OF URGENCY.
