Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Vote First: Our Democratic Duty

Vote First: Our Democratic Duty

The air in Bihar today hums with the energy of democracy, as citizens cast their votes across 121 constituencies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message, 'Vote first, refreshments later' (pehle matadan, phir jalpan), is a poignant reminder of the fundamental importance of civic participation. It’s a simple phrase, yet it encapsulates a profound truth about our society and the power each individual holds.

I’ve always believed that the act of voting is not merely a right, but a solemn duty. Seeing leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi (n.modi@india.gov.in), and prominent figures such as Tejashwi Yadav, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, and Lalu Prasad Yadav exercising their franchise, as reported by The Times of India “‘Vote first, refreshments later’: PM Modi’s message to Bihar voters; polling across 121 seats today” and India TV "'Pehle matadan, phir jalpan': PM Modi's message as voting for first phase of Bihar elections begins | India News – India TV", reinforces this. Even Chirag, in the midst of political banter, participated in the democratic process “‘Vote first, refreshments later’: PM Modi’s message to Bihar voters; polling across 121 seats today”.

It makes me reflect on how far we have come in understanding the pulse of the electorate. Years ago, I wrote about the 'Winds of Change' Winds of Change, discussing how opinion polls, despite their limitations, offer valuable pointers to societal trends. Today, while data analytics and AI (as I've recently observed in the context of 'AI Looms Over Polls' AI Looms Over Polls) play an increasing role in understanding voter preferences, the fundamental act of stepping into the polling booth remains profoundly human and irreplaceable.

The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic of voter engagement and the dynamics of elections years ago. I had already highlighted the significance of public sentiment and the evolving landscape of political participation, and I had even proposed ways to analyze and engage with these trends. Now, seeing how things have unfolded with such direct appeals to voters, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.

My blog on 'One Nation, One Election' One Nation, One Election also touched upon encouraging higher voter turnout and minimizing election fatigue. PM Modi's message today serves as a powerful, localized reiteration of this broader goal – to ensure that every voice is heard, and every vote counts, before we get to enjoy the 'refreshments' of a functioning democracy.
