Context :

Working Group to Push Remote Working in IT,ITes   /  29 Aug 2020

Extract :

Ø  This working group is under the larger inter-ministerial group set up by the Ministry of Electronics and IT , which has been coordinating with other ministries including telecom, labour and commece to bring in largescale reforms to boost the work from home model

Ø  The industry has sought for streamlining laws that will enable it to not just work from home but also from anywhere

Ø  In the context of work from anywhere, the industry requires technologically agnostic solutions for connectivity. The current rules require VPN connectivity , but the industry should be allowed to use any technology as long as it is secure

Ø  …. Agents should be allowed to connect with the local service of the OSP without first getting into the physical OSP cloud connectivity centre

Ø  There are other issues such as mandatory location reporting , which may have to be revised if the employees are given the choice to work from anywhere

From a meagre export of, under $ 100 million in mid ‘80s , how did our IT / ITes industry manage to reach export of $ 190 BILLION , last year ?

Because someone in the Central Government took the following bold / out-of-box decisions to UNSHACKLE the industry :

Ø  Anyone can import computers

I remember that, in 1982, when the company that I worked for, wanted to import a main-frame computer, we had to ask DOE ( Department of Electronics ) to issue an advertisement ( tender ) at our cost . DOE, even decided what configuration was best for us, by changing the specifications we wrote !

We could not advertise on our own !  Offers were received / evaluated by DOE and negotiations with the suppliers were also conducted by DOE ( we were allowed to join the negotiating team but with little say in the matter ! ).

Ø  Any private company / individual can carry-out “ After Sales Service “ of imported computers

At one time, CMC ( Computer Maintenance Corporation of India / a Government of India undertaking ) had the ABSOLUTE MONOPOLY of maintaining all the computers imported from abroad (even if owned by private-sector companies). No private party can do this !

Ø  Any IT company can export SOFTWARE directly ( bypassing any Govt agency ) , using leased lines from telephone companies

A few decades ago, when Indian companies started getting foreign orders for development of software, they were COMPELLED to route their exports, only through VSNL ( I believe one had to handover to VSNL, a CD / HARD DISK , loaded with the code ! ). Reason ? Some govt babu believed that IT companies were under-invoicing !

Today, VPs of Indian IT companies constituting the “ Working Group “- would laugh at the above-mentioned “ Reforms “ !

But, it is possible that the IT Companies around the World, are right now laughing at the plight of Indian IT / ITes companies, who must BEG the government to UNSHACKLE them from ALL rules / regulations, which come in the way of :

Ø  Working from Home

Ø  Working from Anywhere

Dear Shri RaviShankar Prasadji,

This is no time ( considering the urgency to revive the Economy ) to ask IT / ITes industry :

“ Which rules / regulations, do you want ditched / deleted ? “

This is the time to tell the industry :

“You have to export $ 500 billion by 2024

Now write down your own policy and go ahead “

When I read the following article, I realized that I had postulated above was uncannily similar to the hypothesis being advanced in the following article :

Ø  This means that the current mass of information produced every year is insignificant, about the weight of a single E. coli bacteria, Vopson said. But, assuming that same 20% growth per year, half of Earth's mass could be converted into digital data in less than 500 years.

Ø  Assuming a 50% growth rate, half the planet would be information by just 2245. Vopson's findings appeared Aug. 11 in the same journal, AIP Advances.

Ø  A way to alleviate the issues of storing such vast amounts of data might be to develop technology that would keep information in non-material mediums such as holograms, he said

Wireless Power Transmission ?

Context :

The dream of Wireless power transmission might soon become a reality  [ 19 Aug 2020 ]

Extract :

Ø  A startup from New Zealand has now developed a safe method to wirelessly transmit electric power across long distances.

Ø  EMROD has produced the first long-range, high-power, wireless power transmission alternative to the traditional copper wire method by using the concept of electromagnetic waves

Ø  Emrod has convinced a power distribution company to try their innovation on a commercial scale. It might not be free, but it would be cheap, accessible, and scaled up with ease

Ø  The setup contains a transmitting antenna, a series of relays and a receiving rectenna — a rectifying antenna capable of converting microwave energy into electricity

Ø  The line of sight between each relay is the only limiting factor for the distance of transmission — thus greatly reducing infrastructure & maintenance costs & environmental impact, that a wired solution imposes.

Ø  This wireless transmission could be the key to harnessing renewable energy which is often generated in areas far from where it is needed

MY TAKE : 

Even after successful commercialization, this invention of EMROD will not make DISCOMS obsolete

But it will, most certainly, disrupt the businesses of :

Ø  Manufacturers of ( current design ) Transmission Towers

Ø  Manufacturers of High Voltage transmission cables

Ø  Construction companies engaged in laying transmission lines

To fully appreciate how this invention will enable :

Ø  Transmission to Earth, power generated in space ( Solar or Magnetism based )

Ø  Getting rid of ALL fossil-fuel based ( dirty power ) generation ( in next 10 years )

Ø  Never a blackout / brownout ( supply matching demand 24x7, everywhere )

Ø  Power @ Re 1 / Kwh ( making for a LOW COST ECONOMY )

Ø  Storing of surplus power in grid-size Li-ion Battery Storage Installations

Ø  Doing away with need to lay expensive / time-consuming Power Transmission Lines to evacuate solar power expected to be generated at Rajasthan / Kutchh / Lahul and Spiti / Ladakh,

All this can happen if we have a World Power Grid ! A power-sharing eco-system for the entire World !

In that case , all through 24 hours , regions in daylight will keep generating solar power and keep exporting to regions under night sky - without bothering to store !

The GEI could thus turn the 12-hour time difference between New York and Beijing into an advantage, sending power in one direction or the other as those cities’ demand peaks at different times.

DARPA is making Nikola Tesla's dream of wireless energy a reality

Relays in the form of long-endurance drones and satellites will play a crucial role in the future. These drones, hovering at high altitudes, will transmit laser energy to each other over extended distances before delivering it to a U.S. military base. Similarly, satellites will perform the same mission in space.

“POWER is developing stratospheric platforms with small apertures ranging approximately 100 kilometers between nodes. With larger apertures and a more benign environment like space, distances between nodes of up to 1,000 kilometers are reasonable,” Calhoun added. The result would be a “globally scalable energy distribution network.”

As with all of its projects, once DARPA has demonstrated the POWER project's viability in theory, it will turn it over to other government organizations for actual implementation. Additionally, there are clear uses for POWER in the commercial sphere, such as supplying energy to far-flung communities, research facilities, and other challenging locations. Additionally, the energy could come from renewable resources, making it both environmentally friendly and widely available.
