Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Truth in Elections: SC's Stance

Truth in Elections: SC's Stance

The Supreme Court has once again reinforced a fundamental principle for our democracy: transparency. The recent directive that mandates the revelation of all convictions for candidates or facing disqualification is a landmark step towards ensuring greater integrity in our electoral processes "Reveal all convictions or face disqualification: SC | India News - The Times of India". This crucial development was reported by Dhananjay Mahapatra in The Times of India, and it truly underscores the judiciary's commitment to holding public representatives to account.

For years, I have advocated for reforms that bring greater transparency and accountability to public life. I remember discussing the urgent need for electoral reforms, questioning why certain directives from the Supreme Court were not being implemented, as I highlighted in my blog post, "Supreme Court seeks answers from government over poll reforms". Back then, I sensed a reluctance from political parties to embrace changes that might curb their arbitrary powers, a sentiment I explored in "Reforming Elections and Lok Sabha [REaL]".

This latest ruling by the Supreme Court resonates deeply with my long-standing belief that informed citizenry is the bedrock of a healthy democracy. It is about empowering voters with complete information, allowing them to make choices based on full disclosure, not hidden truths. It is a powerful affirmation that those who seek to serve the public must first be transparent with the public.

The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.

My efforts towards advocating for a more transparent and efficient judiciary, such as through digital courts and live streaming, as discussed in "24x7 E-Courts" and "Technology in Courts: SC goes from Strength to Strength", are rooted in the same philosophy: that openness fosters trust and improves governance. The principles of clarity and honesty are not just ideals for the judicial system; they are vital for every aspect of public representation, especially elections.

This directive is a crucial step towards fostering a more ethical and accountable political landscape. It is about strengthening the very foundations of our democratic process by ensuring that the people we elect are truly fit to represent us, with no hidden pasts.
