I recently came across an intriguing survey revealing that nearly half of all novelists believe artificial intelligence could one day replace them. This sentiment, highlighted in articles I’ve seen from sources like Pew Research, Sky News, and The Verge, strikes a profound chord with some thoughts I've harbored for quite some time.
Foresight on AI's Impact
Years ago, even as far back as 2010, I shared a vision that resonates strongly with today's discussions about AI's capabilities. I predicted that the future of information retrieval would move beyond simply 'searching' on platforms like Google. As I noted in my blog, "Future of Search Engines" https://lnkd.in/dnZGbgHv, I envisaged a world where people would "enter their current / expected 'problem' in a hand - held device and receive readymade 'solution / answer / advice' in milliseconds!" This wasn't just about finding data; it was about generating coherent, useful output, much like what generative AI is now doing, including creative writing.
The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.
The Human Element in Content Creation
While AI's ability to generate text is undeniable, the concept of 'compelling content' remains paramount. Back in 2014, I was advising Sanjivani and Kailas to dedicate time daily to reading newsletters from sources like Social Media Examiner and Zeke Camusio's (zeke@dataspeaks.ai) insights to build truly engaging material for www.hemenparekh.in and various social media platforms. Zeke Camusio's (zeke@dataspeaks.ai) advice on creating "pretty posts that pack a punch" http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2014/06/fw-11-wordpress-techniques-for-pretty_17.html underscores that aesthetics and impact are crucial, regardless of the creator. This suggests that while AI can draft, the finesse and strategic intent to make content truly 'compelling' often require a human touch.
My ongoing work with my Personal AI, as documented in various exchanges, further illustrates my long-standing engagement with AI's potential in managing and generating content. For instance, my discussions with Sandeep Tamhankar (stamhankar@apple.com) regarding the upload and search of my extensive knowledge base, including 14,600 pages of textbooks http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2024/08/re-new-document-search-feature.html, directly relate to how AI can process and structure information. The detailed conversations with Sharon Zhang (sharon-hipaa@personal.ai), CTO & Co-founder of Personal AI, about keyword extraction, API functionalities, and optimizing the display of 'topics' for user interaction, often involving Manoj Hardwani's parsing efforts and input from Kartavya (kartavya@sparksignals.tech) and Suman, reveal the complexities inherent in making AI truly reflect an individual's 'Area of Knowledge' http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2023/09/keywords-for-sample-content.html. My prior engagement with Elton on tracking blog site metrics http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2024/01/social-marketing-of-blog-site.html also shows my focus on the reach and impact of content, beyond just its generation.
These interactions emphasize that while AI can certainly augment content creation, and perhaps even automate certain forms of writing, the essence of a unique voice, the strategic intent behind communication, and the nuanced understanding required to make content truly resonate remain a human domain. Novelists, I believe, will continue to carve out their invaluable niche by tapping into the depths of human experience, emotion, and creativity that AI, for all its prowess, has yet to fully grasp.
