The recent news about India's power grid buckling under immense heatwave pressure India’s Power Grid Buckles Under Heatwave Pressure, Study Urges Rapid Shift To Renewables truly strikes a chord with me. It’s a stark reminder of the urgent need for a fundamental shift in our energy strategy. The escalating frequency of extreme weather events, as highlighted by the UNEP on Facebook The climate emergency is making extreme weather events like heatwaves and wildfi, isn't just a distant environmental concern; it's a direct threat to our infrastructure and daily lives. We are seeing the impact not just on power, but also on air quality, with reports of severe AQI levels in regions like Delhi-NCR, exacerbated by vehicular emissions and stubble burning Delhi-NCR pollution: Several places hit severe AQI levels; vehicular emission, stubble burning key contributors. These issues are interconnected, symptoms of an unsustainable path.
Looking back, I had touched upon these very themes of energy disruption and the imperative of moving towards cleaner sources years ago. In my blog, "Disruption : The Inevitable", penned in 2018, I explicitly listed how "Coal based Power Plants" would be disrupted by "Solar Power Plants" and "Electric Transmission Lines" by "Roof Top Solar Panels." The core idea I wanted to convey then, and which rings even truer now, is that anticipating these shifts isn't enough; we need to proactively embrace them. It's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is.
I also remember discussing the potential of various renewable energy solutions. In "Akash: Reaching for the Sky", I noted that innovative solutions like "printed solar films" and "swappable battery solar cookers" held immense promise for clean energy access. Conversations with individuals like Akash Ambani (ambania@jio.com) and his team, who are keen to explore such innovations, are exactly the kind of collaborations that can drive India's green transformation. This present crisis only validates the vision for such technologies and renews the urgency to revisit those earlier ideas.
This isn't just about technological change; it's about instilling a "Creating a Sense of Urgency" across all sectors, a concept I explored even earlier in 2003. I wrote to SriRam (sriram@smarterdharma.com), Raju, and Kartavya (kartavya@sparksignals.tech) about the necessity of cutting cycle times and implementing new strategies rapidly to survive in a fiercely competitive environment. This ethos of swift action and embracing change is precisely what India needs now in its energy transition. We cannot afford to move slowly when the climate emergency demands a rapid, decisive shift. The time for deliberation is long past; the time for action is now.
Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation regarding my earlier predictions and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas. They clearly hold immense value in the current context. India has the potential to lead this renewable revolution, not just by adopting green technologies but by innovating and deploying them at an unprecedented scale. This is not merely an economic opportunity; it is an ecological imperative and a societal responsibility.

Hemen Parekh
