Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Safeguarding Aadhaar: A Validation

Safeguarding Aadhaar: A Validation

The news circulating recently about the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) considering new regulations to prevent private entities from storing Aadhaar data has truly resonated with me Hindustan Times, Facebook/Financial Express, Pressreader. It's a significant step towards reinforcing data privacy and security, a topic I have explored extensively over the years.

For a long time, I have been reflecting on the nature of personal data in our increasingly digital world. I often liken 'content (personal/private data)' to an air molecule – once it's released, it travels freely and is consumed countless times. The introduction of technologies like 5G and Li-Fi only accelerates this process, making data inherently difficult to contain or destroy, as I discussed in my blog, 'ARIHANT : beyond thought experiment' [http://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2018/05/arihant-beyond-thought-experiment.html]. This fundamental challenge of information entropy means that robust safeguards are not merely good practice but an absolute necessity.

I had previously delved into the intricacies and potential 'Nightmare' scenarios surrounding Aadhaar, privacy, and data protection, years ago [https://myblogepage.blogspot.in/2018/03/nightmare-aadhar-privacy-dataprotection.html]. My blog archives, which you can search by topics like 'Data Protection' and 'Privacy' [http://emailothers.blogspot.com/2019/04/simplifying-search.html], bear witness to my continuous engagement with these critical issues.

The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded with UIDAI's proactive stance, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.

This move by UIDAI is a welcome recognition of the inherent vulnerabilities when private entities hold sensitive biometric and demographic data. It underscores the ongoing societal responsibility to ensure that the convenience offered by digital identification systems does not come at the cost of individual autonomy and privacy. The journey towards absolute data security is long and complex, but steps like these are crucial for building trust and protecting the digital identities of millions.

Regards,
Hemen Parekh
