Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

India's Oil Hedge Under Pressure

India's Oil Hedge Under Pressure
Synopsis: As geopolitical tensions continue to reshape global energy routes, India faces a complex test of its energy security strategy. The persistent volatility in the Strait of Hormuz has forced a pivot toward Russian crude, but this reliance now faces its own set of fragility and logistical pressures.

The question of India’s energy security is no longer just about volume—it is about the integrity of our supply chains in an increasingly fractious world. I have long argued that we live in an era where energy is not just a commodity but the fundamental bedrock of sovereign stability. Recent events in the Red Sea and the broader Strait of Hormuz have, once again, put this reality into sharp focus.

The Pivot to Russian Crude

When the Strait of Hormuz faced significant disruptions, India needed a reliable, scalable alternative to traditional Middle Eastern suppliers. Russia emerged as that pivot. According to insights from Sumit Ritolia (sritolia@kpler.com), Lead Analyst for Modelling and Refining at Kpler, Russian crude has become our strongest energy security hedge, allowing Indian refiners to maintain high run rates and avoid the feedstock shortages that have plagued other Asian markets.

It is fascinating to observe how quickly we transitioned. Before 2022, Russian oil was a marginal player in our import basket. Today, it accounts for nearly half of our imports. This shift was not merely opportunistic; it was a structural necessity forced by the volatility at the world’s most critical maritime chokepoint.

The Fragility of Alternatives

However, we must be careful not to mistake a bridge for a permanent foundation. As Sumit Ritolia (sritolia@kpler.com) has highlighted, while Russian barrels provide an immediate buffer against Hormuz-related chokepoint risks, this supply chain is not immune to its own vulnerabilities:

  • Infrastructure Stress: Ukrainian drone strikes on key Russian Baltic and Black Sea ports have tested the resilience of these export gateways.
  • Market Dynamics: As Russia faces its own domestic fuel crises, we are seeing the irony of Moscow looking to purchase gasoline from Indian refiners—a complete reversal of traditional energy trade roles.
  • Economic Realities: While Russian crude remains discounted, the increased freight costs, insurance premiums, and the need for longer shipping distances mean that we are not entirely insulated from global price shocks.

Looking Ahead

I have previously discussed the necessity of agility in procurement. Our current strategy of diversifying our supply base—balancing Russian volumes with renewed flows through bypass infrastructure from the UAE and Saudi Arabia—is a prudent response to this new reality. Yet, we must acknowledge that diversification does not shield us from higher global prices.

We are essentially buying an insurance policy against supply chain failure. The premiums are our logistical and operational costs, and the deductible is our exposure to global market benchmarks. As long as geopolitical tensions keep the Strait of Hormuz on edge, the current reconfigured landscape of global energy trade will remain our new normal.

His analysis continues to provide critical context for how these macro-geopolitical risks translate into the daily reality of refinery operations and national energy security.
