Subject:
Rethinking our business: Beyond Thermal, toward a future-ready Power Corporation
===================================================
Dear Chairman ( NTPC )
I am writing to you today regarding your significant announcement to invest Rs 16.7 lakh crore in capital expenditure over the next 11 years. It is an ambitious commitment that signals a deep long-term focus for the corporation.
This news reminds me of Theodore Levitt’s seminal Harvard Business Review essay, "Marketing Myopia." Levitt famously noted that American railroads failed because they defined their business as "railroads" rather than "transporting people," allowing the car industry to render them obsolete.
For years, I have tracked and written extensively about the critical challenges facing NTPC—particularly regarding the declining Plant Load Factor (PLF) of thermal power plants. In my earlier analyses, I have repeatedly highlighted that as India’s renewable energy capacity continues to soar, the reliance on traditional coal-fired generation faces severe techno-economic headwinds.

Blog - "Coal Story: Missing Points" - April 2017.
As early as 2017, I suggested that NTPC must reinvent itself—perhaps by rebranding as NSPC (National Solar Power Corporation)—to avoid the risk of building assets that could become stranded or economically unviable in a rapidly shifting energy landscape.
Email - "GOING SOLAR?" - February 2017.
Your new capital investment plan presents the perfect opportunity to embrace this "Marketing Myopia" lesson. It is time to look beyond the "Thermal" identity. By dropping the "T" and rebranding as NPC—a comprehensive "National Power Corporation"—you would signal a bold pivot toward being a technology-agnostic, future-ready energy leader rather than a thermal-bound generator.
This is a transition that others in the sector, such as NHPC, should surely consider as well. Defining your business by the purpose (providing reliable power) rather than the input (thermal generation) is the surest way to ensure the institution remains relevant for the next century.
Congratulations on realizing the necessity of this scale of investment; now, let us ensure the identity matches the ambition.
Best regards,
