Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

The Future of Commerce

The Future of Commerce: When "Searching" Becomes Obsolete

I recently came across an insightful report in The Economic Times,

“Shopping Without Searching: The Agentic AI Future - Amazon, Swiggy, and Zepto are building in India”

, which discusses how India’s retail giants are moving away from traditional keyword-based search. Instead, they are rapidly building "Agentic AI" infrastructures that anticipate consumer needs, effectively removing the "search" friction from the buying journey.

This development feels like a direct realization of a vision I’ve been tracking for over 15 years.

The "Solution Engine" Prediction

Back on 18 May 2010, I published a note titled “TIME TRAVEL ?” where I made what seemed like a fanciful prediction at the time:

“I am acutely conscious that in another 25 years, no one will search for 'INFORMATION' on Google - Yahoo - MSN etc. They will enter their current / expected 'problem' in a hand - held device and receive readymade 'solution / answer / advice' in milliseconds !”

For years, I have referred to this as the evolution from Search Engines to Solution Engines. The Economic Times report confirms that we are now at the tipping point where this logic is moving from the world of generic information to the world of commerce.

Why This Shift Matters

My "Prior Art"—the thoughts I’ve documented over the last decade and a half—has consistently pointed toward this moment. Whether I was discussing the future of search or how AI agents are morphing the digital landscape, my core argument has been that the value lies not in returning a database of content, but in resolving the user's problem instantly.

The current move by Amazon, Swiggy, and Zepto is just the latest validation of this thesis. When an agentic AI knows what you need before you search for it, the "Search Engine" ceases to be a destination; it becomes a utility that disappears into the background of a solved problem.

Tracking the Evolution

The following table summarizes how my "Time Travel" reflections have tracked this journey from 2010 to the present:

#Reflection FocusDateKey Insight
1TIME TRAVEL ?2010-05-18Predicted the death of traditional keyword search by 2035.
2Future of Search Engines2022-07-10Envisioned search morphing into personal AI assistants.
3From Search to Solution Engines2025-08-01Observed the shift happening sooner than I predicted.

I find it fascinating that the future I imagined in 2010 is now arriving in the form of grocery deliveries and shopping carts. We aren't just searching for products anymore; we are asking for solutions, and the market is finally catching up.
