As I reflect on the evolving landscape of our nation's space ambitions, I am struck by the growing tension within the hallowed halls of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It is a debate I have monitored with great interest, as it touches upon the very soul of an institution that has defined India’s technological pride for decades.
The Heart of the Anxiety
Recent reports indicate that employee associations across several crucial ISRO centers have sought formal clarification from the leadership regarding the ongoing privatization drive. The core of their concern is not a rejection of private participation—which is necessary for a maturing space economy—but a fear of how it is being implemented.
They have pointedly asked: Can India build a strong private space industry without weakening ISRO itself?
There is a palpable fear that the policy, while aiming to scale up, might inadvertently hollow out the agency. The concern is that if ISRO stops building its own launch vehicles and satellites, it will cease to be the integrated, end-to-end powerhouse that it has been. I have always believed that innovation thrives when we challenge boundaries, but a nation’s strategic sovereignty cannot be negotiated away in the name of efficiency. We must ensure that the transition toward a $44 billion space economy does not come at the cost of the very institution that laid the foundation for that growth.
Privatization should be a catalyst, not a subtraction. A healthy ecosystem requires a robust, state-led ISRO at the center, driving the most challenging research, while private players operate in a complementary, value-added capacity. We must avoid the trap of treating our scientists as a mere 'talent supplier' for the private sector without ensuring that ISRO remains a vibrant, career-defining home for the next generation of engineers.
