Request for DRDO Evaluation of Directed Energy Technology to Prevent Railway Track Fatalities

Dear Shri Ashwini Vaishnawji,
I am writing to bring to your attention a potential technological solution for a long-
standing, preventable tragedy: the loss of life caused by people crossing railway
tracks.
Ten years ago, in my blog “Indian Railways: A Trillion Dollar Opportunity” (Sept 3,
2016), I first proposed utilizing Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) technology mounted
on train engines to create a protective field along the tracks. The objective was to
disrupt the electronic devices (such as smart phones) of individuals crossing the
tracks, thereby forcing them to look up from their screens and alerting them to
the imminent danger.
Despite my consistent follow-ups on this issue—most recently in my blog post
“Saving Lives” (July 2025), which highlights that over 3,600 lives have been lost to
track-crossing in just the last three years—the idea remains a vital, yet untapped,
safety opportunity.
Recent defense developments have now made this concept fundamentally more
feasible. I recently noted reports regarding
DRDO’s 30 kW Directed Energy Weapon (DEW),
which is specifically designed to "soft kill" drones by neutralizing their electronics.
I respectfully request that you direct the relevant team at DRDO to evaluate
whether this DEW technology can be scaled down and adapted for railway safety.
Instead of neutralizing drones at a distance of 20 KM, a modified, low-power
version mounted on trains could be calibrated to safely disable smart phones
within a range of 2 KM, focused 10 feet on either side of the track. This would
serve as an automated, non-lethal, and psychologically effective warning system
for individuals in restricted areas.
Harnessing indigenous defense innovation for public safety would be a landmark
step for Indian Railways, building upon the spirit of your KAVACH initiative. I
would be honored if you could have your office review the technical feasibility of
this proposal.
