Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

The Pipe and the Brain, Repriced: Alphabet's $511 Billion Day

The Pipe and the Brain, Repriced: Alphabet's $511 Billion Day

Alphabet lost about $511 billion of market value in a day because AI Mode earns less than the search it replaces, while carrying more than $1 trillion of future obligations. Anthropic asks public markets to underwrite $637 billion of commitments on $16.3 billion of half-year revenue. Jio holds ₹13.1 lakh crore and reports its first results today, having used ₹27,500 crore of IPO money to repay debt. On 21 October I called India's biggest IPO a pipe, not a brain. The market has now repriced both sides. I propose one disclosure line that would make the difference visible.

On Thursday Alphabet fell 13 per cent to $281.37 and erased about $511 billion of market value, its worst day on record (NDTV Profit, 30 October; Quartz, 30 October). Its chief business officer, Philipp Schindler, gave the reason himself: AI Mode, the new tab in Search, carries "lower monetization".

The arithmetic behind that phrase, from those reports and Reuters (29 October):

  • Property and equipment: $51.4 billion in the quarter, against $24.0 billion a year earlier.
  • Free cash flow: minus $9.07 billion, after minus $5.9 billion in Q2 — two quarters in a row.
  • Future commitments: $924 billion for computing and energy, plus $152 billion of unstarted leases. Over $1 trillion.
  • Long-term debt: $125.1 billion, from $46.5 billion at the end of 2025.
  • Search and other revenue: $63.35 billion, up 12 per cent, against 17 per cent in Q2.

Now the other side of the same trade. Anthropic filed publicly on 26 October, and IFR reported on 30 October that its prospectus carries $637 billion of commitments, of which $431 billion of compute cannot be cancelled. First-half revenue was $16.3 billion, against a first-half net loss of $80.7 billion (Boston Globe, 29 October). Analysts put the valuation at $1.5–2 trillion, with the roadshow from the week of 9 November and trading on 20 November (IFR).

And the pipe. Jio Platforms closed at ₹1,419.50 on the NSE on Thursday, a market value of ₹13,10,491 crore, 27 per cent above its ₹1,119 issue price (The Hans India, 30 October). Its board meets today, with SMC Global expecting about ₹40,000 crore of revenue and 18 per cent profit growth (Mint, 30 October). Of the ₹30,213 crore raised, up to ₹27,500 crore went to repay Reliance Jio Infocomm's borrowings (Fortune India, 15 October). Not one GPU on that list.

On 21 October I argued that India's biggest IPO gives us a pipe, not a brain. In March 2024 I had put the same question as arithmetic: in "The BIG TECH: Ask Them to Return the Loot" I set the Magnificent Seven's FY24 capex against India's entire FY25 capital outlay and found it nearly 50 per cent larger.

In "Is AI a Bubble?" (December 2025) I said the transformation is real and that capital allocation is where bubbles are made. The market has now drawn the line: the brain is the risky asset, the pipe is the safe one. Which leaves India oddly placed — we own the pipe, we rent the brain, and foreign investors pulled a record ₹3.08 lakh crore out of Indian equities in the first nine months of 2026, nearly twice all of 2025 (The New Indian Express, 29 October).

So I would suggest one line, SEBI-mandated, in every quarterly filing: rupees spent on AI compute, and rupees earned from AI products. Two numbers, side by side. Alphabet's repricing might then have been slower; Jio's ₹13.1 lakh crore would be visible as network and as software. A disclosure line will not train a model. But it would keep us from mistaking a listing for a capability, or a rent bill for a brain.
