=============================================
The UPI ecosystem has officially crossed its 10-year milestone, now processing
transactions at an incredible rate of Rs 1 crore per second. This is a monumental
achievement in India’s digital journey, a vision that seemed both bold and
necessary when we were just beginning to map the potential of BHIM.
Back in 2017, when the digital payment landscape was still in its infancy, I
outlined a roadmap for the evolution of the BHIM app—a vision that looked far
beyond the early versions to where we are today.
Reflecting on the Evolution: From BHIM 1.0 to 10.0
In my post, "BHIM: the Unstoppable" - April 2017, I charted a path for how digital
payments needed to simplify and democratize access for every Indian, especially
the rural and illiterate populations who were initially excluded by the friction of
typed information.
- BHIM 1.0 (Dec 2016):
- This was our starting point. It required users to type a significant amount of
- information, creating a barrier to entry for many.
- BHIM 2.0 (March 2017):
- This version introduced the integration of "Aadhaar Pay" with UPI, which
- allowed for biometric authentication. As the Prime Minister noted at the time,
- "There was an era when the thumb was a sign of being illiterate. Now, the
- thumb (used for Aadhaar-based transactions) has become your strength."
My roadmap envisioned reaching BHIM 10.0,
- moving through stages that prioritized voice activation, conversational AI, and
seamless, invisible integrations into the daily lives of citizens. I consistently
advocated for conversational APIs and voice-activated interfaces as the essential
bridge to true financial inclusion.

Seeing UPI hit these astronomical transaction volumes today confirms that the
core philosophy—making payments as natural as a conversation—was the right
one. While we have moved beyond the nomenclature of "BHIM versions," the
spirit of that evolution continues to power the UPI infrastructure today.
We have come a long way from the manual entry days of 2016, and as we look
ahead, the journey from those early versions to our current state of universal
digital acceptance proves that in India, the only way is forward.
