Rahulji : Did You Mean This ?

Context :

Kharge, Rahul urge PM to amend caste format in census form

 Extract :

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha’s Leader of the Opposition

Rahul Gandhi on  Tuesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to amend the

open-ended format the ongoing census is  using to collect caste data, something

that means that the government could end up with hundreds of thousands of

 caste names.

With no pre-approved list (as was used in completed caste counts in Bihar and

Telangana), this means that census officials have a Herculean task in analysing

the data. There are also fears that this could mean the data never sees light of

data -- much like the 2011 exercise to count castes that failed for the same

 reason.

In their letter to the PM, the two Congress leaders suggested that the government

call an all-party  meeting, consult experts and add a drop-down box specifically for

OBCs (other backward classes) based on the model used by Telangana in its 2024

 caste survey.

===================================================

I asked META :

“In its 2024 caste survey , Telengana is supposed to have listed caste names ( for

selection by people being surveyed ) in a drop box ( drop list )

 List these caste names “

META replied :

“In Telangana's 2024 SEEEPC (Socio-Economic, Education, Employment, Political &

 Caste) Survey,  the drop-down had 243 sub-castes + 'No Caste' + 'Others' =

245 options in total.

The survey covered  3.55 crore people across 245 sub-castes.

The official break-up as per the report is:

59 SC + 32 ST + 134 BC + 20 OC

( including No Caste & Others )

— this is the structure listed in the 2024 survey document.

Main Caste Names That Appeared in the Drop-List

These 73 castes make up 96% of Telangana's

population, as per the Expert Group report.

Dear  Rahulji  :

Govt has already initiated the revised process of "  Self  Census "

This requires a citizen to upload his personal data ONLINE

Which citizen would have the patience to search his " Caste / Sub-caste " online , from a drop lit of 245 names ?

I doubt if anyone will take such trouble

On the other hand , it would be much easier - and accurate too - to :

#   Let people WRITE ( free text - no dropbox ) what they believe to be their cast

#   Let Experts prepare a MASTER  MAPPING  LIST ( in advance )

#   AI software will MAP whatver people type with this MASTER MAPPING LIST

Regards,

Hemen  Parekh
