TITLE: YEH RISHTA KYA KEHLATA HAI – EPISODE 19 FEB
EPISODE: “HOSTEL KI PEHLI RAAT – MAIRA VS MUKTI”
FORMAT: DAILY SOAP SCRIPT (TELEVISION)
FADE IN:
INT. GIRLS’ HOSTEL CORRIDOR – NIGHT
A narrow, slightly noisy corridor. GIRLS walk with suitcases, chatter echoing. The WARDEN reads out room allotments from a file.
WARDEN
Room 204. Maira Poddar…
and… Mukti.
CAMERA CUTS between:
– MAIRA, trolley bag, trendy yet nervous.
– MUKTI, backpack, simple and stubborn.
Both look up at the same time.
MAIRA
(under her breath)
Please God, not her.
MUKTI
(murmurs)
Bas yehi reh gaya tha.
They step forward together, shocked.
MAIRA
Excuse me, ma’am. There’s some mistake.
I can’t share with… *her*.
MUKTI
Same! I mean, I’m also saying
the same. I can’t stay with *princess*.
WARDEN
(firm)
Hostel hai, five star hotel nahi.
Room change tab hoga jab complaint
aayegi *mere paas*, aapas mein
nahin. Samjhi?
She signs the register and walks off.
Maira and Mukti are left glaring.
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. ROOM 204 – FEW MINUTES LATER
A compact room, two beds, one cupboard divided by tape, two study tables.
Maira DRAGS her trolley to the bed near the window.
MUKTI
That’s my side.
MAIRA
Window side is mine. I get
headaches without fresh air.
MUKTI
Toh main oxygen pe case kar doon?
Maine pehle dekha tha.
They both simultaneously grab the same bedpost. A tug-of-war.
MAIRA
You know what, keep the bed.
Main toh sirf itna chahti hoon
ke tumhari wajah se mera hostel
life kharab na ho.
MUKTI
Mera bhi yahi plan hai.
They yank their hands away, dusting them as if they touched something gross.
MAIRA
Fine. Ek rule.
MUKTI
Mere bhi do–teen rules hai.
They talk over each other.
MAIRA / MUKTI
Tum–
Beat. They glare.
MAIRA
Tum pehle bolo.
MUKTI
Nahi, tum bol do. Ladies first.
MAIRA
Main hi lady hoon yahan.
MUKTI
Haan isi liye toh bol rahi hoon –
main pehle bolungi.
They almost smile at the absurdity, then catch themselves.
MAIRA
(cold)
Stay on *your* side. Don’t touch
my things…
(eyes flick to her bed)
…and don’t breathe on my pillow.
MUKTI
Meri taraf mat aana, mera food
mat khana, aur please… *please*
mere naam pe drama mat karna.
They turn away from each other.
CUT TO:
INT. PODDAR HOUSE – ARMAAN’S ROOM – NIGHT
ARMAAN sits at his desk, laptop open, files scattered. He stares at a FAMILY PHOTO with MAIRA.
ARMAAN (V.O.)
Hostel mein adjust kar payegi na…
Krish pops his head in.
KRISH
Bhai, abhi bhi kaam? Itni raat ko?
ARMAAN
(fake casual)
Haan, kal ke redevelopment file
dekhni hai.
KRISH
Ya phir kal se bina Maira ke
ghar kitna khaali lagega, woh
sochna avoid karna hai?
Armaan looks away, busted, but doesn’t admit it.
ARMAAN
Krish, file.
KRISH
(softly)
She’ll be fine, bhai. Maira
ko tumhari aadat hai… aaj se
usse khud ki bhi aadat daalni hogi.
Armaan forces a small smile. Krish leaves.
HOLD on Armaan, worried.
CUT TO:
INT. ABHIRA’S GARAGE – NIGHT
Spanners clink, a CAR hoisted up. ABHIRA, in overalls, wipes grease from her hands but keeps working.
NISHI (O.S.)
Abhira, raat ke do baj rahe hain.
Ghar chalo.
Abhira tightens a bolt harder than needed.
ABHIRA
Agar main ruk jaaun na, toh
sirf Mukti yaad aayegi.
NISHI
(gently)
Aur agar gir gayi thak ke toh?
Abhira exhales.
ABHIRA
(soft)
Uske bina… pehli raat hai.
She stares at a small keychain Mukti gifted her, hanging on a nail.
ABHIRA (V.O.)
Bas is baar woh akeli na ho.
MATCH CUT TO:
INT. ROOM 204 – SAME TIME
Mukti lies on her bed, staring at the ceiling, clutching a tiny photo of ABHIRA.
On the other side, Maira scrolls through her phone gallery on silent – pictures of ARMAAN and her.
SPLIT SCREEN:
– Maira with Armaan’s photo.
– Mukti with Abhira’s photo.
MAIRA (V.O.)
Armaan bhaiya, without you
I’m going to mess this up.
MUKTI (V.O.)
Abhira, tu hoti toh hostel
bhi ghar lagta.
They both wipe their eyes quickly, pretending they are not crying.
Maira’s stomach GROWLS.
MAIRA
(muttering)
Great. First night, hostel ka
emotional torture *aur* bhook.
Mukti’s stomach growls in sync.
They turn their backs more firmly to each other.
FADE OUT.
TITLE CARD: NEXT MORNING
FADE IN:
INT. COLLEGE CLASSROOM – DAY
A buzz of FRESHERS. Maira and Mukti sit at opposite corners of the same bench, a big distance between them.
The PROFESSOR, mid-40s, strict but fair, writes an equation / legal principle / engineering diagram (as per track) on the board.
PROFESSOR
So, who will answer this?
Mukti’s hand SHOOTS UP.
PROFESSOR (CONT’D)
Yes, the one in the—
Before he can complete, MAIRA answers from her seat, not even raising her hand.
MAIRA
Sir, the solution is…
She rattles off the perfect answer, confident.
Students murmur, impressed.
Mukti freezes, hand still raised.
MUKTI
Sir, but…
PROFESSOR
(cuts her off)
Very good, Maira.
Maira flashes a willful half-smile.
MUKTI
(to Maira)
Tumne haath bhi nahi uthaya.
MAIRA
Ye KBC nahi hai. Teacher ne
question poocha, maine answer
diya. Simple.
MUKTI
Etiquette naam ki bhi koi cheez hoti hai.
MAIRA
Etiquette se zyada important
hota hai *knowledge*.
Students start watching the brewing fight.
PROFESSOR
(irritated)
Enough, both of you! This is a
classroom, not your personal ring.
Beat.
PROFESSOR (CONT’D)
Do options: Either apologize to
each other *right now*… or get
out of my class.
Maira and Mukti glance at each other, horrified at the idea of being thrown out on day one.
MUKTI
(through gritted teeth)
Sorry.
MAIRA
(with a sugar-coated smile)
I’m… sorry too.
The apology is hollow but they say it simultaneously.
PROFESSOR
Good. Sit. Next time, you’re out.
They sit, fuming.
MUKTI
(whisper)
Show-off.
MAIRA
(whisper back)
Cry-baby.
They face the board again, pretending to listen.
CUT TO:
INT. PODDAR HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – DAY
KAJAL sits with TANYA, tea cups in hand.
KAJAL
Tanya, ab tumhari bhi shaadi ko
itna time ho gaya. Ab family
*complete* karne ka socho.
Tanya’s phone BUZZES – a message from MANOJ:
“Deal cracked! We did it!”
Her lips curve into a relieved smile.
TANYA
Mom, ek good news hai. Manoj ne–
KAJAL
(interrupting)
Good news tab hogi jab tum
mujhe ek baby de dogi. Yeh office
wale good news se kya hoga?
Tanya’s face falls.
TANYA
Career bhi important hota hai.
Mera decision hai…
KAJAL
Decision? Tum pills le rahi ho,
mujhe sab pata hai.
Tanya freezes.
TANYA
(shaken)
Main… main nahi chahti ke iss
ghar mein ek aur bachchi Maira
jaisi life jiyen. Half-loved.
Half-accepted.
Beat. Kajal softens for a second.
KAJAL
Kam se kam Krish ko batao.
Tanya looks away, torn.
MATCH CUT TO:
INT. COLLEGE CAFETERIA – AFTERNOON
Metal trays slide, HOSTEL FOOD is plopped on plates. Maira and Mukti stand in line, coincidentally, one behind the other.
MUKTI
(muttering)
Yeh khana hai ya punishment?
MAIRA
(under breath)
Hospital ka worst soup bhi
isse better hoga.
They move to opposite corners but end up sitting at the same long table, far apart.
Maira pokes her food.
MAIRA (V.O.)
Home ka paratha, Manisha ki
kheer, Armaan bhaiya ka extra
cheese pizza… sab miss ho raha hai.
Mukti forces a bite.
MUKTI (V.O.)
Abhira ke haath ki chai… ghar
ki simple daal… sab yaad aa raha hai.
Out loud, almost together:
MAIRA / MUKTI
Eww, hostel ka khana.
They catch each other’s echo, look away.
CUT TO:
INT. ROOM 204 – EVENING
Light is dim, a tube light flickers.
Maira stands at the window, phone in hand, drafting a message to Armaan:
“Told you I’ll manage…”
She stops, deletes it.
MAIRA
(to herself)
Nahi. No more pranks, no more
nautanki. Tumhe pareshan karna
band, Armaan bhaiya.
She folds her hands in a tiny prayer.
MAIRA (CONT’D)
Bas mujhe hostel mein kisi
Mukti-type roomie se bachana,
God… oh wait.
She throws a look at Mukti, who’s on her own bed.
Mukti arranges a small DIY temple on her study table – a printed picture of God, a tiny diya stand.
MUKTI
(soft prayer)
Please, Abhira ko strong rakhna,
mujhe bhi. Aur mujhe is Miss
Attitude se door hi rakhna.
They accidentally meet each other’s gaze. Awkward.
MAIRA
Tum… God se complain kar rahi ho
mere against?
MUKTI
Nahi. Sirf feedback de rahi hoon.
Beat of silence.
The hostel BELL RINGS announcing dinner.
CUT TO:
INT. HOSTEL MESS – NIGHT
Lights are slightly low, GENERATOR HUMS in the background.
Students eat. Maira and Mukti, again, same table, opposite ends. Plates CLATTER, distant laughter.
Suddenly – the LIGHTS FLICKER and go OFF.
MESS IN DARKNESS. Girls SCREAM playfully.
In the chaos, Maira gets up with her tray, trying to feel her way to the counter.
MAIRA
Excuse me… plate rakhni hai…
At the same moment, Mukti also gets up.
BANG! They COLLIDE. The tray tilts. A little food SPLASHES.
MAIRA
Ouch! Dekh ke—
MUKTI
Tum dekh ke nahi chal sakti?
Derisive overlap.
MAIRA
Tum toh walking disaster ho.
MUKTI
Aur tum disaster ka brand ambassador.
The emergency light comes on – a dull yellow glow, enough to see each other clearly.
The WARDEN approaches, exasperated.
WARDEN
Phir tum dono! Har jagah fight?
Hostel rules padhe the na admit
form mein?
Maira and Mukti mumble.
MAIRA / MUKTI
Sorry, ma’am.
WARDEN
Kal se extra duty – mess
clean karna. Together.
Their heads SNAP up.
MAIRA
*Together*?
MUKTI
Ma’am, please—
WARDEN
One more argument, aur main
principal ke paas le jaaungi.
She walks away.
Maira and Mukti stare at each other like sworn enemies forced into alliance.
SMASH CUT TO:
EXT. HOSTEL GATE – LATE NIGHT
ARMAAN’s car pulls up on one side of the campus, headlights off.
ABHIRA’s jeep/bike rolls in from the opposite side.
VOICE-OVER (PROMO-STYLE, MALE)
VOICE-OVER
Armaan aur Abhira sochte hain
ke woh ek doosre se nafrat karte
hain… lekin kismat ne unke liye
kuch aur hi likha hai.
INTERCUT:
– Armaan signs in at the security desk, asking for Maira’s block.
– Abhira signs in, asking for Mukti’s block.
INT. HOSTEL CORRIDOR – SAME TIME
The corridor is dark; only EMERGENCY LIGHTS GLIMMER.
Armaan moves towards ROOM 206 (Mukti’s room).
Abhira moves towards ROOM 204 (Maira’s room).
Inside ROOM 204:
– Maira lies curled on her bed, half-asleep, missing Armaan.
– Mukti is in the next room (206), struggling with notes, missing Abhira.
FOOTSTEPS outside.
The LIGHTS GO OFF COMPLETELY.
INT. ROOM 204 – CONTINUOUS
The DOOR opens with a soft CREAK.
A FIGURE enters – ABHIRA – lit only by a faint phone torch behind her.
Maira stirs, eyes still hazy, feels a familiar aura.
MAIRA
(sleepy, emotional)
Abhira…?
She blinks, trying to focus in the dark.
INT. ROOM 206 – CONTINUOUS
Another DOOR opens – ARMAAN steps into Mukti’s room, silhouetted.
Mukti feels the presence, heart skipping a beat.
MUKTI
(whisper)
Armaan… bhaiya?
CLOSE ON:
– Abhira, frozen, realizing whose voice she just heard.
– Armaan, stunned to hear Mukti’s trembling whisper.
VOICE-OVER (PROMO-STYLE)
VOICE-OVER
Jab hostel ki aandhi mein milenge
Armaan aur Abhira… kya Maira aur
Mukti banenge unke beech ka pul?
Ya phir ek nayi ladai shuru hogi?
HOLD ON:
– Maira’s wide, hopeful eyes in the dark.
– Mukti’s tear-brimmed gaze.
– Shadows of Armaan and Abhira just a step away from each other… unknowingly.
FADE OUT.
