Seva and Cinema: A Moment in Amritsar

I write this sitting at my desk, thinking about the odd ways public life and private faith intersect. This month a well-known Bollywood star returned to Sachkhand Sri Darbar Sahib — the Golden Temple — for the second time, offering prayers and quietly participating in seva while in Amritsar for her new film, Amri. The images and videos that followed felt less like celebrity theatre and more like a reminder: ritual and humility remain stubbornly human, no matter the headlines.

What I noticed

  • The visit was simple and unadorned: traditional attire, head covered, hands folded. In some clips she sits on the floor, washing dishes and doing routine work alongside others — the Sikh practice of seva made visible in a way that felt familiar and grounding.Times of India report
  • This wasn't a single, media-friendly pilgrimage. Reports indicate she has been moving across multiple religious sites in Punjab while shooting; Amritsar has become both a workplace and a place for reflection.Hindustan Times report
  • Seva — the act of selfless service — is inherently democratic: it flattens social distinctions in shared action. Seeing a star engage in it reminded me how ritual work can humanize and reframe public perception.

Why this matters to me

I have always been fascinated by the choreography of public ritual. As someone who thinks about culture and communication, I see three threads in moments like these:

  1. Personal anchoring: Public figures often carry immense symbolic weight. When they seek quiet at places of worship, it signals a search for grounding beyond image management.
  2. The performative and the genuine: Media will parse every gesture as publicity or authenticity. Yet the act itself — washing dishes, listening to kirtan, standing in darshan — has value regardless of how it’s framed.
  3. Cultural continuity: Film shoots, PR cycles, and global stardom are new layers; the practices witnessed at the Golden Temple are ancient. Their coexistence is a reminder that modernity does not erase tradition.

Reflections for creators and observers

  • If you make films or tell stories about people, pay attention to these small, quiet moments. They reveal more about character and culture than any staged sequence.
  • For audiences, resisting quick judgments helps. A public figure’s visit to a sacred space can be both a personal act and a public gesture — sometimes both at once.

In the end, the story that stayed with me wasn’t about the film called Amri or the bustle of a shoot. It was about the ordinary dignity of service: hands in soapy water, sitting shoulder to shoulder, a shared rhythm of care. That’s worth noticing — whether you’re a filmmaker, a fan, or simply a passerby.

Regards,
Hemen Parekh
