Why I listen to the 20–30 year veterans
I’ve spent the last few years having long, candid conversations with executives who’ve lived through the browser wars, mobile revolutions, cloud migrations and the last two platform shifts. What strikes me again and again is how uniformly they react when we talk about today's AI wave: their tone shifts from curiosity to gravity. They tell me this is not merely another product cycle. This is a structural change.
That sense of scale is echoed by the CEO of one of the companies that shaped the internet. In a national interview, Google’s CEO described AI as “the most profound technology humanity is working on — more profound than fire or electricity,” and urged a cross-disciplinary, societal response to manage risk and reward.Google CEO on 60 Minutes
What the veterans keep repeating
When I press them for specifics, the answers converge into a few repeatable themes:
- Magnitude: This is platform-scale — it changes how we find, create, learn and decide.
- Acceleration: Unlike past waves, the feedback loops here are faster; adoption and risk amplify quickly.
- Responsibility: Governance, auditability and multidisciplinary design (ethicists, social scientists, domain experts) must sit at the table from day one.
- Human+AI roles: Jobs will evolve; those who pair domain expertise with AI fluency will lead the next era.
These are not speculative musings. They come from people who have seen multiple tectonic shifts and know what a decade of lag looks like when institutions are slow to adapt.
What this means for leaders and builders
If you are an executive, product leader or founder, here are practical bets that keep surfacing in my conversations:
- Prioritise model governance and audit trails now, not after a mistake.
- Invest in human-in-the-loop design and explainability for frontline operators.
- Build teams that mix engineers with domain experts and ethicists.
- Create upskilling paths that pair domain knowledge with AI tool literacy.
- Assume regulatory attention; design products to be auditable and privacy-preserving.
These are not just defensive moves — they are competitive advantages. Systems designed with safety, transparency and human partnership at the core tend to scale with trust.
Where I’ve written about this before
Years ago I framed what I call Parekh’s Law of Chatbots — a set of simple rules about safety, human feedback and controls for conversational systems. Many of the themes I keep hearing from veteran execs today are echoes of that framework: safety-first design, human oversight, and clear accountability.Parekh’s Law of Chatbots
If anything, the recent public discussion — including national interviews with major tech CEOs and the frenetic product launches across the industry — has only reinforced the urgency of those rules.
My bottom-line counsel
I try to keep counsel concise when decisions are urgent:
- Treat AI as a platform shift, not a feature.
- Design for alignment and auditability from day one.
- Educate your leadership team about the trade-offs (capability vs. risk).
- Partner with regulators and civil society early — adversarial relationships slow safety work.
We are in the early innings. But the tempo has changed. The organizations that move deliberately, transparently and with humility will shape the institutions that follow.
