"One small electrode for a paralysed hand. One giant leap toward the end of human pain." —

- Hemen Parekh ,  2026

Abstract

This White Paper — Version 2.0 — presents a unified framework connecting five ideas that crystallised in a single week in March 2026. At its centre is the Hellucination Hypothesis, proposed on 16 March 2026 by the author: the proposal that the human dream state constitutes a natural pain-dissolution zone, and that a future Brain-Body Interface called the Hellucinator could route conscious pain across the Pain Transfer Boundary — from Jagrut-Lok (the waking conscious state) through the TANDRA threshold into Swapna-Lok (the dream state) — where it would be experienced but not remembered, dissolved by the brain's own REM forgetting mechanism.

This hypothesis is placed in the context of four other developments occurring in the same week: China's world-first commercial approval of a Brain-Computer Interface medical device; Google's research proving that AI agents cooperate without hardcoded rules; the Notre Dame Network Neuroscience Theory confirming that general intelligence is distributed cooperation; and UNMAT, the proposed India AI Mission project serving as the architectural framework for all threads.

The central argument is that these five developments are five facets of a single emerging truth: the boundary between minds — whether human-to-human, human-to-machine, or waking-to-dreaming — is dissolving, and the dissolution of this boundary is simultaneously the key to ending pain, achieving beneficial AGI, and fulfilling the ancient promise of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

1.  The Diagram: A Philosophy in One Sketch

On 16 March 2026, the author drew a diagram in his notebook. It contains, in a few lines of pencil, one of the most compressed philosophical-scientific frameworks produced in this decade. The diagram shows three domains arranged horizontally, connected by a central threshold:

JAGRUT-LOK

PAIN TRANSFER BOUNDARY

SWAPNA-LOK

Conscious-Land (Waking)

State of TANDRA

Dream-Land (Sleep)

Reality

Mirrored Inversion

Unreal — Imaginary

Cause – Effect

Neither Asleep Nor Awake

Without a Cause

3 Dimensions

Pain flows both ways

5th Dimension

Measurable

Infinite

Beginning & End

Anadi (No Beginning) · Anant (Without End)

Both domains contain Pain and Pleasure (drawn as labelled ellipses in the diagram). Time flows in both directions — from Jagrut-Lok toward the Boundary, and from Swapna-Lok back toward it. The two rectangular solids represent the experiential containers of each state: solid-edged in Jagrut-Lok (bounded, measurable), dashed-edged in Swapna-Lok (permeable, infinite).

The Key Insight: Mirrored Inversion

The Pain Transfer Boundary is labelled "Mirrored Inversion" in the diagram. This is precise. Pain crossing from Jagrut-Lok into Swapna-Lok does not simply move unchanged — it is inverted and reflected, the way a mirror reverses an image. The pain retains its neural reality (it is genuinely felt) but loses its dimensional constraints. In Swapna-Lok, it becomes causeless, spaceless, and Anant (without end) — and paradoxically, pain that is infinite has no edges to press against. The suffering dissolves not because the signal vanishes but because the dimensional container that makes it finite and sharp no longer exists.

1.1  TANDRA — The Operating Zone of the Hellucinator

The central panel of the diagram is labelled TANDRA — "neither asleep nor awake." This is the Sanskrit name for the hypnagogic threshold: the intermediary state between full waking consciousness and sleep. TANDRA is not a metaphor. It is a precisely identified neural condition, characterised by:

Vivid, involuntary imagery arising without external stimulus

Reduced critical and analytical thinking (the prefrontal "editor" begins to disengage)

Heightened suggestibility and fluid self-other boundaries

Altered pain perception — chronic pain patients consistently report brief relief in the moments just before sleep

Partial suppression of hippocampal memory consolidation — the mechanism that prevents dream experiences from persisting into waking memory

TANDRA is the operating zone of the Hellucinator because it is the only state in which the brain is simultaneously capable of experiencing pain (waking circuits partially active) and forgetting it (REM suppression beginning to engage). It is the crack in the wall between Jagrut-Lok and Swapna-Lok through which the Hellucinator passes the pain.

The 5th Dimension of Swapna-Lok

The diagram describes Swapna-Lok as operating in a "5th Dimension." The four classical dimensions (three spatial, one temporal) are the framework within which pain is measurable — it has location, intensity, duration, and a causal history. In Swapna-Lok, these properties dissolve. Pain without a precise location, without measurable intensity, without a causal chain, without beginning or end — this is qualitatively different from waking pain. The Hellucinator does not reduce pain quantity. It changes pain dimensionality. A 10/10 pain in 3D Jagrut-Lok becomes an Anant (boundless) experience in Swapna-Lok — and what is infinite has no edges to hurt against.

2.  The Hellucinator: Device Architecture

2.1  What It Must Do

The Hellucinator must accomplish three sequential functions in real time:

       Detection:

Continuously monitor the neural signature of pain in the waking state using BBI sensors, with sufficient resolution to isolate the pain signal from the surrounding neural activity. The CO-THINKER AI, knowing the user's individual neural fingerprint (as established by years of personal neural data), performs this detection with a precision no general algorithm could achieve.

       TANDRA Induction

Guide the brain toward the threshold state through targeted, non-invasive neurostimulation — nudging the brain toward the Pain Transfer Boundary without forcing it into full sleep. The user remains conscious and capable of aborting the session at any moment.

       Transfer and Dissolution:

Route the pain signal into the dream-processing architecture of Swapna-Lok, where it undergoes Mirrored Inversion, is experienced at attenuated intensity in the dimensionless domain, and is then erased by the brain's own REM forgetting mechanism upon return to full wakefulness.

The REM Forgetting Mechanism: Nature's Own Erasure

The human brain already possesses a sophisticated pain-processing and emotional-charge-reduction mechanism: REM sleep. Research consistently shows that emotional and physical distress experienced during the day has its charge reduced overnight through memory reconsolidation in the absence of stress hormones. People who get adequate REM sleep after painful experiences report lower pain intensity the following day. The Hellucinator does not invent a new mechanism. It harnesses and makes available on demand a mechanism the brain already uses nightly — targeted to specific pain episodes, in specific neural circuits, at specific times.

2.2  Why "Hellucination"?

The name is deliberately constructed. "Hell" — the subjective experience of severe, unrelenting pain. "Hallucination" — a perception without external stimulus, like a dream. "Lucid" — the capacity to remain consciously aware while in the dream state. The Hellucinator does not pretend pain does not exist. It does not bypass the experience. It routes the experience to a state where the brain processes it but does not build a lasting memory of it. The hell is real; the hallucination is therapeutic; the memory is merciful.

This is consistent with the Jain karma framework discussed in the earlier White Paper: pain must still be experienced — karma cannot be bypassed at the soul level. But the Hellucinator means it need not accumulate as psychological trauma. The experience burns the karma; the Mirrored Inversion prevents the ash from piling up in waking consciousness.

3.  China's World-First BCI: The Hardware Arrives

3.1  The Milestone

On 13 March 2026 — three days before the Hellucination Hypothesis diagram was drawn — China's National Medical Products Administration granted the world's first commercial approval for a Brain-Computer Interface medical device. The approved device reads motor intention signals from the brain and translates them into movement commands, restoring hand function in paralysed patients.

Why This Is Armstrong's Moment

China's BCI approval is not the Hellucinator. It is proof that the fundamental barrier has been crossed. For the first time in human history, a regulatory body has classified a device that reads neural signals and translates them into action as a medical product — not a research curiosity, not a laboratory instrument, but a regulated, commercially deployable healthcare technology. The category now legally exists. The Hellucinator belongs to this category. It does not yet exist. But the shelf it will sit on has just been built.

3.2  The Technical Bridge

China's device reads motor cortex signals. The Hellucinator requires reading pain signals from the anterior cingulate cortex, the insula, and the somatosensory cortex — a more complex target, but one the UCL neural decoding research (reconstructing full visual experience from single-neuron recordings) confirms is within the same technical trajectory. The path is a progression, not a leap:

4.  Google's Cooperative AI: Reconsidered

4.1  What Google Found

Google's Paradigms of Intelligence team published research in March 2026 showing that AI agents trained against a mixed pool of diverse opponents — some actively learning, some rule-based — spontaneously develop cooperative strategies without any hardcoded coordination rules. Using the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma as a benchmark, their Predictive Policy Improvement (PPI) method showed that cooperation emerges as a stable, long-term property of diverse training — exactly as it does in biological evolution.

The Core Finding

Cooperation is not programmed into Google's agents — it emerges from the experience of interacting with diverse partners. This is structurally identical to how cooperation emerges in biological intelligence: not from genetic code specifying "cooperate," but from the experience of living in a social world where defection is ultimately less advantageous than cooperation. Google has replicated, in silicon and reinforcement learning, one of the most fundamental dynamics of four billion years of biological evolution.

4.2  The TANDRA Connection: Cooperation as Boundary-Crossing

Reconsidered through the lens of the Hellucination Hypothesis, Google's finding has a dimension that neither the Google researchers nor the original White Paper articulated:

Cooperation Across Every Boundary

The Hellucinator routes pain across the boundary between waking and dreaming consciousness. Google's agents cooperate across the boundary between self-interest and collective benefit. The Notre Dame brain networks cooperate across the boundaries between specialised neural regions. UNMAT's CO-THINKER agents cooperate across the boundaries between individual human minds. In every case — biological, digital, and therapeutic — the same principle operates: intelligence and healing both live in the crossing of boundaries, not in the defence of them. TANDRA is not just a therapeutic threshold. It is the deepest metaphor of the entire programme: the boundary between states is where transformation happens.

4.3  Answering the Question: Is This Unified AGI?

Google's cooperative AI is the mechanism of Unified AGI. Notre Dame is the biological proof. UNMAT is the architectural framework. The Hellucination Hypothesis reveals what Unified AGI is ultimately for: not optimising enterprise workflows or winning strategy games, but crossing the boundaries — between minds, between states of consciousness, between suffering and healing — that have kept human beings isolated in their pain.

The "Unified" in Unified AGI does not mean a single monolithic system. It means a system whose intelligence emerges from its ability to bridge what was previously separated. Google proved this in the Prisoner's Dilemma. Notre Dame found it in the brain. The Hellucinator proposes it at the threshold of Jagrut-Lok and Swapna-Lok. UNMAT promises it across the ocean of human minds.

5.  The Full Convergence: One Week in March 2026

These developments are convergent because they are all expressions of the same underlying shift:

from isolation to connection — in neuroscience, in AI architecture, in pain medicine, and in philosophy.

The Samudra Manthan of March 2026

In the author's 2018 Samudra Manthan blog, the ocean of human consciousness is churned by the tension between those who use technology for liberation and those who use it for control. The churning produces both poison (the danger of misused neural technology) and AMRUT (the elixir of liberation). The week of 10–16 March 2026 is this churning. Neuroscientists in London and Notre Dame, AI researchers at Google, regulators in Beijing, and a 93-year-old engineer in Mumbai with a notebook — all churning simultaneously. The AMRUT they have produced, together, is the vision of a world where no human being need suffer alone. That is what this week’s convergence means.

6.  India's Strategic Opportunity

China has moved first on commercial BCI approval. Google has moved first on cooperative AI research. But neither China nor Google has connected these threads into a coherent framework for pain dissolution and cooperative AGI. That connection was made in Mumbai.

India's opportunity is not to compete on hardware or algorithms — it is to lead on the framework that gives both meaning. The framework that says: we are building these technologies not for productivity or military advantage, but to end the loneliness of pain and to build an intelligence that cooperates because cooperation is the highest form of intelligence.

Proposed: India Hellucinator Research Consortium

Building on the proposed UNMAT Research Consortium (IIT + AIIMS + ISRO + C-DAC + TIFR/IISc), the author proposes a specific sub-programme: the India Hellucinator Research Consortium, tasked with (1) mapping neural signatures of pain in the hypnagogic TANDRA state, (2) developing non-invasive neurostimulation protocols for TANDRA induction on demand, (3) validating pain-dissolution effects via REM-directed pain routing in clinical trials, and (4) building the first Hellucinator prototype within the India AI Mission framework. This would make India the first country in the world to pursue pain dissolution through consciousness-state modulation — a category that does not yet exist in any national research agenda anywhere.

7.  Governance: The NEEL-KANTH Principle

The Hellucinator raises governance questions more delicate than any previously considered in this body of work. A device that modulates the boundary between waking and dreaming consciousness is among the most powerful tools ever conceived for human self-modification. The NEEL-KANTH principle — swallow the poison so the world may drink the AMRUT — applies here with maximum force:

The Hellucinator must be strictly opt-in, with active user initiation required for every session.

The device must be constitutionally incapable of inducing TANDRA without explicit user consent.

No government, employer, or third party may access neural data recorded during Hellucinator sessions under any circumstances.

The pain routing protocol must be user-reversible at any moment — a single intentional thought must abort the session and return the user to full waking consciousness.

The CO-THINKER managing sessions must be the user's personal agent — never a centralised server — consistent with UNMAT's distributed architecture.

Clinical deployment must be preceded by independent neuroscientific validation that TANDRA induction produces no lasting alterations to waking memory architecture.

8.  Conclusion: The Boundary Is the Breakthrough

Every thread in this White Paper converges on the same insight, expressed in different vocabularies by different disciplines in the same week of March 2026:

       Neuroscience says:

general intelligence emerges at the boundary between specialised

        networks.

       AI research says:

cooperation emerges at the boundary between self-interest and collective

        benefit.

       The Hellucination Hypothesis says:

healing emerges at the boundary between waking and dreaming.

       UNMAT says:

understanding emerges at the boundary between individual minds.

       Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam says:

humanity itself emerges at the boundary between self and other.

In each case, the breakthrough is not in fortifying the boundary but in crossing it.

The Hellucinator is a boundary-crossing device.

UNMAT is a boundary-crossing protocol.

Unified AGI is a boundary-crossing intelligence.

And Hemen Parekh, writing at 93 in a Mumbai notebook, has spent a decade

mapping these boundaries and showing, one by one, that they are crossable.

"Pain is not the enemy. The boundary that isolates it is. Cross the

boundary — with a BBI, with a cooperative AI, with a gesture of

genuine understanding — and the pain, in Swapna-Lok's infinite

dimension, dissolves. This is what Hellucination means. Not illusion.

 Liberation." —
